Anyone use the waterproof mp3 players? I see one thats a case for an ipod shuffle, the H2Oaudio model, and also finis makes one.
Anyone use any of these? I’m very skeptical of these unless I hear otherwise…
I have a finis swimp3 player my dad gave me. I wasn’t sure what it would be like, but it’s crystal clear underwater. If you get bored swimming and have the $$, it’s really worth it.
I had to swim on a tether at my mother-in-laws pool last summer (wife was pregnant). I could get a solid 30 minute workout in just jamming out to music.
No water leak into the headphones? The last thing I would want to happen is get in the middle of a workout and a headphone shorts out from water getting in much like they can on a long run with sweat
No, look at the finis swimp3. It uses bone conduction (put them against your cheek bone), so there’s nothing that goes in you’re ear. It’s not an aftermarket waterproofing system.
Really, if you are looking for something and have the $$, like I said before you can’t go wrong. The only time I don’t wear it is when I’m swimming with my wife.
I just bought the Swimp3 and love it. Once its on I do not notice it and it sounds great, and no headphones. I can swim with earplugs in and enjoy some fugazi.
I just watched a you tube video on it. Having it attached to your headphones, does it take some getting used to having it just inches from your eyes?
My Girlfriend just gave me the Finis Swimp3 as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately, I must have a weird shaped head. The sound was great but it caused my goggles to leak or if I tightened my goggles it caused too much pressure on my face bones…I found it uncomfortable.
But as a previous poster said, there are no headphones, there are just two plastic pieces that attach to your goggle straps and it sits on your cheek bone. The reviews are almost all positive. For me it was just to annoying. I found myself playing with it more than just swimming.
I have the H2O Audio it works great you don’t even know it’s there when you are swimming other than the fact that you have music. No leaks.

I have the finis and its pretty decent. I have to place the “ear phones” closer to my ears than Im suppose to to be able to hear it good. It doesn’t conduct very well on my cheek bones. Also, I can take it for about 30 minutes, but after that, it causes my goggles to be too uncomfortable. It pulls them tighter on my eyes and becomes too bothersome. I still enjoy them, though.
I also have the Finis Swim mp3 and it also caused my goggles to leak. I ended up putting it on my goggles behind my ears instead of in front. Viola! No leaking goggles and the sounds is still good. Problem solved.
BTW, I have had it now for about 2 years and it works extremely well and very durable. I do tend to use it more when I do water running versus swimming. I keep it in my swimming bag so gets very rough treatment and it has held up.

I tried the Finis SwimP3 (a couple models) and was very unimpressed with the sound (no bass). It also doesn’t use iTunes if that makes a difference for you. Now I use an H2O audio case with an iPod Shuffle and H2O audio flex headphones ($20 on Swimoutlet). I put everything under my cap. I made some modifications by using the ‘plunger’ type earpieces like the ones featured here http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/17460.htm. Now I can use the same shuffle I use when running and never have to worry about the earpieces falling out (total cost ~$100 if you already have a shuffle). I rarely use this in open water but I can still hear propeller sounds (because of bone conduction). If I wear this when I swim at the pool with my wife, I just leave one earpiece out so we can chat at the end of a set.
Without the MP3, I would be bored senseless in the pool–best swimming aid I have ever used but that’s just me.
I am very tempted to try the after-market water proofed shuffles that can be picked up for <$200. That would result in much less ‘stuff’ under my cap.
I have and H2O Audio case that goes on my arm with my ipod nano in it. It uses waterproof headphones. The key is getting a very good tight seal with the earphones. They are great for the really long sets. Occasionally, I will have to take them out, blow water out and put them back in. All in all they are great though.
I have the H20 Audio model that holds an iPod shuffle and goes on the strap of your goggles. Love it. Wouldn’t swim without it anymore.
The headphones are attached and come with the unit, so they’re waterproof. The only issue I sometimes have is if the headphones aren’t fitted into my ears well water will sometimes get in there and it changes the sound quality. I can just re-position them and go back about my business though.
The Swimp3 isn’t perfect, but it works. As some have said you may have problems with some goggles. I use the Speedo Vanquisher which has two straps, so I only put the earphones (bonephones?) under one of the straps. With other goggles I wear (B70) they have a single strap that breaks into two near the back, I can’t use the Swimp3 because it picks up that single strap too much and my goggles leak.
Also, don’t judge the swimp3 by what it sounds like out of the water, under water with earplugs is where it is really perfect. However, don’t expect audiophile sounds. Bass is very muddied and breaks up on songs with a lot of bass.
Finally, it doesn’t sync with iTunes and supports a limited number of file types (WMA and MP3). So you probably have to convert and then sync.
However, I STILL like it. I don’t care if the sound is perfect, and I have the same workout mix on it every time I swim. You can also find older models really, really cheap (I think mine was like $40 on eBay).

It will use itunes…you just have to convert the song file to an mp3 format. Easily done.

My wife has the Waterfi (waterproofed Shuffle) and loves it. I tried it once with her and it worked pretty well. No cases or anything and you can also use it for running without worrying if it rains or gets soaked with sweat.
I like my swimp3 alot. The audio is pretty good, the sound quality isn’t awesome. It’s hassle free though, I really like that. It just works.
One thing I did notice is I have to amplify the entire recording if I want to listen to a podcast on it. I use audacity to do that.
I have the finis swimp3 as well. My goggles also leaked, but I thought about it and realized the goggle strap has two bands on each side. Hang it on the OUTSIDE strap, not the nearest strap to the goggles.

The one made by H2O audio works great. I had issues with fit and had to buy one of their fit kits (about 20 various sets of plugs). Alos use it for running with the visor they make for it.
