Swim goggles - does shape make a difference to speed?

This is probably a dumb question, but I find the larger goggles (ie Aquasphere Vista) much more comfortable to swim in and better preventing leaks… Plus I don’t look like a raccoon at work all day after a morning swim with goggle marks on my eyes.

For races etc, does it make any difference to speed if you’re wearing one of the larger semi-mask type goggles like the Vista vs smaller normal sets like Kayenne? I figure the Vista is a bit larger but not sure if this would affect hydrodynamics to any appreciable degree. FWIW I’m a MOP or better swimmer, but not leading the race.

Thanks,
Dtv

Wear what’s comfortable. That said top swimmers tend to wear low profile goggles like the swedish.

a raccoon or a dork? you’re going to look like one of them…

I honestly don’t think it makes that much difference over an hour of open water swimming, a lot of other area’s to get more efficient in the water first.

I’m proud to be a raccoon…

No.

Yes, they probably do make a difference, but you’re talking maybe a tenth of a second per 100. Which can be all the difference in the world to a pool swimmer, but doesn’t really matter for triathlon purposes.

Speedo has a cap & goggle ‘system’ as part of their Fastskin 3 suit rollout:

Course rumor mill says the Fastskin goggles are quietly being recalled right now for some unspecified problem.

As for raccoon eyes, I actually have fewer problems with that from swedes or socket rockets once I get the fit dialed in than I do from padded goggles.

If you’re more comfortable in them, you’ll probably train better (or at least spend less time on the wall fidgeting with straps on uncomfortable goggles).

I’d steer away from the scuba goggles, but no need to go for some socket rockets- those Vista’s are fine.

The difference it’ll make is null.

Unless you are chasing an olympic medal in the pool, the drag won’t be enough to make a difference. Plus you have vision you may not have otherwise. This helps you stay on course.

If it helps at all, Amanda Beard is wearing the Kayenne goggle and is on track to qualify for the Olympics. Again. Faris Al Sutan wears the Vista. He could wear something smaller but he doesn’t.

If you feel comfortable and can see, you should be just fine.

Thanks all for the great advice… I’ll stick with the vistas and look like a dork
Appreciated

Thanks for starting this thread. I have always wondered about that. I do mess with the mask more in a pool but the comfort is worth it.
I’m a dork with a mask, but I’m one without a mask, anyway.

I love it. If this thread was about a bike-related part it would be a completely different set of arguments

I do want to say though, representing the bikers, that if something saves time it has a larger effect on time over a longer distance not smaller

I have no choice in the matter, after my accident and my eye orbit was destroyed, wearing anything other than Aquasphere Vistas hurts like hell. I dont notice any difference…and I’m so slow in the water I dont think it matters. lol
