December 1 we start a new swim challenge. It’s the Tower 26 Challenge, acknowledging a new masters swim program started by Gerry Rodrigues, domiciled in Pacific Palisades. Gerry was the long time head of the UCLA Masters program, and now incepts Tower 26 in Pacific Palisades. If you’re a West L.A. person, Gerry is the best masters / open water coach I know (in addition to being a top notch open water competitor himself).
Now, the Challenge! You’ll find it here.
This isn’t hard. 33,333 yards per month. But, that’s through Christmas, pools close, it’s the flu season, it’s dark, it’s cold, it’s scary. So, maybe it’s not so easy after all!
Two more Winter-long challenges are coming, but, these will be bike-specific, and points-specific. prizes will be awarded.
Granted I am in frozen Canada and I could ride the trainer in my basement.
But a winter-long challenge to me would be more run-specific…
But that is just me!
“How can people jump in on this? Sounds like fun!”
since you’re a forum member, with an account, you can use the training log. you just go to the challenge, click that you’re in, and, your workouts you put on the training log will append to any challenge you’re a part of. i’ll give more explicit instructions in another post.
i’ll have to check, but i think the challenge automatically converts meters to yards, that is, if you put in meters, the challenge totals will show yards.
I am all but certain I didn’t swim that far all of last year! I will watch for the other challenges though. With a very young family at home the swim just takes way too much time. Especially since my longest swim in a race is 1000m.

I recently did 4,900 yards in a Sunday workout. I’m pretty sure that was more yards than I swam in my seven triathlons in 2010…combined.
Im in. We’re already going to be swimming more as part of the National Challenge Competition for USAT’s club winter training contest, so getting to use those miles for 2 different contest works for me.
