Swim. Bike. Run. BEER!

What are everyone’s thoughts on drinking alcohol while training/racing? I know there are a lot of people who avoid alcohol throughout their training and there are those who drink the night before a race.

What are your recommendations for handling alcohol consumption while training and leading up to races? In the past I have usually given up drinking about a month before my A-race of the year.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

I cross train by playing hockey. It is MANDATORY to drink beer with the boys afterwards. Last night was 4 Coors LIght, I know it’s only slightly stronger than water, but it counts.

I try to be generally smart about what I eat & drink, but at the same time I still want to have a life. Buckets of coffee is top of the list!

Don’t give it up if you don’t have a problem with the substance! Drinking is one of the best post race activities ever and makes for some super fun days. I don’t drink a ton before a race but always have 2-3 drinks the night before long races. Part of my ritual and it helps me chill out.
The sport is worthless if you don’t have fun. Beer makes things fun sometimes. Enjoy responsibly!

What works for one might not work for others. That’s one thing that you have to keep in mind with many things related to racing, training, nutrition, etc.

Personally, I gave up alcohol and ice cream for a couple months leading into Boston a few years ago. It didn’t affect me either way. Since then, I have never given up anything in the sake of race performance, etc.

One of my best races came the morning after putting down four pretty strong IPAs at a BBQ joint with dinner. I think I’ve had two tall beers the night before Kona each of the past two years - podium both times. So I’ve made it a tradition to drink beer and eat ribs the night before a big race…it’s my go-to pre-race meal.

Probably not the best idea while training as you may drown or weave into the road and get hit by a car, but as soon as the s/b/r is over - absolutely you should.

One other thing. Stop with the links to your blog here. Just add it in your sig and don’t feel the need to plug it with a new post every time you write something.

I don’t think it’s the best idea getting shithoused on a regular basis or in any sort of big block of training, but I’m not sure it’s necessary to cut it out entirely the way some do. Moderation, just like anything else, including moderation

I thought this thread was for a new format… very disappointed now…

My take: Life is too short to not enjoy good beer. That said…I’m currently on a diet with alcohol on the weekends only. IM is too hard to schlep too many pounds around 140.6 miles.

Talk about a chance for the Clydes to take the OA win!

Sure the fast guy would get to the beer table earliere, but how long is it going to take them to drink the beer.

I’m thinking a 24oz for a sprint. 2 of those for an Oly, maybe a case for a full?,

Mate, don’t bother with asking these lame duck Nth Americans, you just have to look at the success of the Aussies and Kiwis in triathlon and you will have your answer…Now it is your shout ya big girl, get us a beer and bring your sister over here.

I’m not a huge drinker, but the night before a race I’ll often have a beer or two. I consider it carbo loading! (Note to those attempting this at home: stay hydrated with water as well.)

You still need to come get some beer and ribs at Moe’s BBQ.

I’ve learned, whether true or not is to be debated, that if I drink and follow it up with a bottle of Pedilyte (strawberry is by far the best) I often feel like I have no lingering effects the next day from a night of indulgence.

There are plenty who shouldn’t risk the addiction. Then there are those with gout who should avoid beer, those with muscle cramps, those with GERD, those with gluten allergy… well, you see where this is going.

Beer is an excellent lactic acid dissipator!

Moderation! EAT DRINK TRI!

I have spent much of my adult life in places where having a beer is forbidden. No way I would give it up for a hobby. Maybe if you are a professional?

it was easier for me to finish an h.i.m. than it was to finish a duathlon… 5k 20k 5k. drank many many drinks and stayed at the casino till 2am. what a horrible day but i did have a good time and still got the free t shirt but no fun… the half ironman i had a glass of wine . a friend of mine drinks a glass of wine before the start of an ironman. i personaly rarely drink but moderation is the responsible most enjoyable way. a piece of chocolate a glass of wine will never reg. cheers
