Swim 3 miles in 5 hours?

Pretty cool story. Pretty ballsy actually. Don’t know if I would leave my family alone in the ocean.

But I’m sure the ST approved response is “dude, 3 miles in 5 hours? HTFU!”

My family would be so bored for that hour I was gone.

Great story :^)

So why was this idiot out with his family in a small boat in the middle of the night in a storm in the first place?

Mark

Dumping their dog’s body.

So where’s the bike and run in this story?

Maybe he stopped at some of the rafts conveniently set up by the WTC…

FWIW- 3 miles is a long way to go for an untrained swimmer in rough water, with a current, fully clothed, without a wetsuit and goggles, at night

I didn’t read anywhere that he was an untrained swimmer. For all we know, he could be an Ironman. He may even have the tattoo.

Who marked the course? Was it a legit 3 mile?

Two statements that aren’t exactly mutually exclusive.

I see what you did there!

Inductive reasoning- if he were an Ironman with the tattoo, he would have pulled his family to shore and posted a video to ST with a new thread asking about his stroke technique.

He would have had his GPS and HRM on as well to determine the quality of the effort for training purposes and capture his splits.

Depdning on wind and currents, it could have been a hell of a swim.

I’m with others… why in the heck are you so far out from shore at night or daytime without an inflatable life raft, signal flares and an emergency beacon. Not very smart in my mind.

There si also something called “weather radar” the internet and a weather forecast. I’ts easy to avoid storms near shore if you check the weather. Why is it that most heroic feats often come from neglegence, ignorrance, arrogance and//or stupidty. Must be a yen and yang. Although in this case, 9 times out the 10 the story is uaually… he swam for help and was never found again.

No mentoin of why they wrre out there, why they didnt; have any safety gear, if he was wearing a life jacket (I assume he was)

best response!

BAHAHAHA… and in fact “Ironman Untrained Swimmer” is almost redundant

I was there. I ended up taking this picture just down the beach from where he came in… I have already emailed the local official.

Not to mention that 3mi is probably the distance from shore to the rescue location of the boat. Not that it would necessarily make a ton of sense for the boat to have drifted closer to shore if he was “fighting” the wind and current/tide, but it’s possible he swam further than 3mi.

I can’t swim straight in daytime, with land and buoys to sight on.

Yea, that’s why I swim as well. All the engines, safety gear and gadgets could all fail even though you had precautions, like Murphy’s law.
And then what? Are you going to complain about why you went out there, why this didn’t work, we could wait to see what happens…bla bla…I’d swim for my life, and theirs.
They could or could not have found them out there, i think swimming was a good risk to take, plus its only 3 miles. Why not. it’s a good workout.
