SweetWater Brewing Co. 420 Strain Series beer

Why?

I guess I get the shtick but who the hell thought beer that tastes and smells like it was mixed with bong water was a good idea?

It’s undrinkable. I tried each of the four flavors in a sampler pack over a couple of nights and then dumped the remaining eight down the drain.

The beer in and of itself didn’t taste bad if I drank it with my nose plugged but taste and smell go hand in hand so it was terrible. YMMV.

My wife was sitting about 6’ away when I poured one and she was like “What’s that skunky smell?” It’s that strong a smell.

Spent 6 years in Atl and could never understand the fascination. I thought it was all shitty beer.

I love plain ole 420, its what I consider an American Ale - APA, but the 420 strain shit is out of hand. Shit…even B’real from Cypress Hill did a colab with Sweetwater this last go around. When I opened the can it smelled like my dorm room in 1992 and kind bud. No thanks.

Side note, I wonder what will happen to all the new brew beer brands with COVID. My town of Knoxville has approx 20 micro breweries at the moment. We have less than 500k in total population. They better have good stuff to maintain a following.

“I think fewer breweries will close the next six months than the following six months,” he continues. “Everyone is packing it in to get lean and survive right now, but not everyone will make it back to a sustainable business when they do get the doors open again. Landlords probably won’t still be working with us on delayed or partial payments of rent. Banks won’t be providing forbearance anymore. The consumers probably won’t flood back overnight.”

I’ve been living in Atlanta for about the same amount of time and don’t get it either. I think it’s just popular because it was a on of the first craft beers to get popular.

Yes, it was the 420 strain sampler pack. I edited my thread title.

Didn’t know they had just a 420 ale.

I’ve been drinking Sweetwater for almost 20 years(not a lot now, more back in college when it was one of the only micros you could get locally). Their hallmark 420 is good, the Festive Ale is good, and they had a hybrid pilsner/IPA called Road Trip that was a good lighter IPA. The 420 strain stuff is crap. Smells too much like wet newspaper and bud. Now they’re doing seltzers as well. SMH

Next time get Creature Comforts. You’ll like that 10x anything Sweetwater has.

They used to talk about Sweetwater all the time on the Brew Drink Run podcast

When it finally showed up here in NJ, i had to try it, starting with 420 and the IPA

I wasn’t impressed, sorry

Tropacalia is good. I’d also suggest red hare beers if you’re looking for Atlanta area beers.

I actually had a 2 ounce sample tonight. Tasted better than it smelled, but I kept belching up aftertaste and it was awful. Glad it was only a sample and it was free.

Their 420 IPA is only so-so.
