Swedish goggle assembly

the mules have delivered and we’re having xmas in November. one thing they brought were swedish goggles. I got straps, teh plastic goggle and tiny black “speedo” label tube like things. super floppy. any idea what the nose piece is suupposed to be?

should come with a little white string that goes through the tube. If it didn’t you can use a thin piece of cotton string, a fishing line, or scrap the tube and cut a piece of the strap (at a sharp angle) and use that as the nose piece. Won’t last as long but makes for easy adjustments on the fly.

There should be a piece of string that you pass through the black tube thing and through the loops on the goggles to form the nose piece. Either that or you can use a small piece of the strap, if you can get it through the holes for the nosepiece.

You should have a short piece of string that fits inside that little tube; the string goes through one eyelet hole, then through the tube, then through the other eyelet hole, then tie it in a firm knot, and you’re good to go. If you have any friends who use the Swedes, they can show you in 20 sec. My piece of string lasted 5 yrs and around 7.5 million yds but finally had to replace it about 2 months ago, and may have to replace my bungee cord strap soon; I bought the bungee cord because those rubber straps just looked flimsy, and because all the cool kids have the bungees, and they’re only like $2-3. The goggles themselves appear to be virtually indestructible:)

fishing line!!! even with the tube I’d not be trying that one… cotton string as also noted.

Just bought my first Swedish goggles this weekend…went with the small piece of elastic strap between the goggles for easier adjustment. And since I used bungee cords for the strap, I have a lifetime supply if replacement strap material when I need it.

My first few hundred meters in Sunday were kinda disorienting since it had been awhile since I swam in goggles like this that…had to readjust to the distortion around the edges of the goggles!

So far, I am digging them…

Thanks everyone! GREAT instructions!

I use a small piece of the elastic strap too. The little black piece on the speedo version or the little blue piece on the others bothers my nose.

I have to replace it every few months but it’s cheap.

For me the string and rubber/plastic tube are the bomb. Using the elastic there on my nose leads to instability that I can feel the whole time I swim. Every time I push off the wall I can feel the googles giving way at the nose piece (a little).

Well worth it to break out the watch maker type gear – reading glasses, razor blades, tweezers, and super glue – and put in 5-10 minutes to get the string tied right. I paint a little super glue on the string before I cut it so that it doesn’t fray as I put it through the eyelet and the little tube. (You have to let it dry first.)

I’ve used the string before and agree that it is much more stable than the elastic straps but my nose is shaped in such a way that the plastic thing diggs in and hurts me.

I had really hoped that the black Speedo piece would be better but after a month of working with it I went back to the elastic.

SH is a Great swimmer so I guess not everyone agrees BUT: use part of the goggle strap for the nose, not the string.

x2 on the bungee strap. Lasts for years while the rubber strap might last a year. It’s also quickly adjustable if needed instead of tying the strap or using the silly clip. I like the yellow for lake swims and darker for pool. Mirrors might look cool, but it can get dark when the water isn’t clear

good luck

Do you like going one-band or two-band for the headstrap? I’m still trying to figure out the optimal configuration for the headstrap. I think I’m preferring 1-strap due to the adjustability.

Fishing line works ok and lasts forever but you have to double thread it through the tube so it doesn’t touch your nose, otherwise it will cut you pretty quick.

SH is right. String is the way to go if you can get it right. Has taken me 20-30 minutes to get the nose piece just right, but I will get 5+ years on a pair when I take the time. Good idea with the super glue btw. I’ll have to try that.

Since I’ve always used the bungee cord, it’s so long that it is naturally a 2-band unless you cut it in two. I didn’t cut it and hence have always used the 2-band, no experience with just 1 strap. Obv from all the posts, the nose piece and head strap configurations are very individualized:)

I must either have no idea what to look for or I got it right the first time with some beginners luck. I bought the speedo brand swedish goggles a few weeks ago (at your store no less) and got them secured with the string in a few minutes. Fit seems right, at least from a nose bridge perspective, and they give a good seal.

That being said, I’m about to ditch the goggles. Even with keeping the straps loose, after an hour in the pool with these things I feel like I’ve gone a round with Mike Tyson. Very painful, to the point that it’s not worth having the good seal these provide.

This is OT, and I’m sure that I don’t belong in this thread, as we are somewhat the antithesis of Swedes, but AMT, if you are experiencing some pain with the swedes, could I offer a suggestion of the K180 goggle? It’s a very low profile small socket goggle with a minimal thin gasket. You should be able to find those in TJ’s shop too. Similar to a Speed Socket with a better view.

You don’t even have to tie the nose bridge. (too soon?)

If you have pain then you either need to tweak the fit or the cups just don’t fit your face. That’s why it takes me so long to fit. The string stretches ever so slightly after some use to I tie them to anticipate that. Straps are so loose I forget the goggles are on sometimes… Jake is right though, K180 is a great low profile goggle that is comfortable right out of the box. I used K180 for Ironman Texas with great success.

I’ll drop by the Louetta shop today and check them out. Nothing like trying new gear 4 days out from your priority race!

Ditch the string and use a piece of the strap. And when that little piece eventually melts and breaks cut another one and when you run out of strap just get a new pair of swedes for $5.
