I’m a runner by background and have never really worn sunglasses while I ran. Once I got into cycling I began to wear sunglasses more. I currently have a pair of Oakley Jawbones that I love to ride with and really like how they feel when I run. I have run in them a handful of times including a couple races this year, but notice that when sweat rolls down my face, it gets on the inside of the lenses, making it really tough to see. Normally when I am not wearing sunglasses, I just wipe away sweat as it rolls down the corners of my eyes… can’t really do that with glasses on. Last race I tried to wipe the sweat off the lenses and smeared it even worse so I was looking through foggy smeared lenses.
Any tips to avoid this? It seems most wear sunglasses for longer races so there must be some solution. Am I just wearing sunglasses that are not ideal for running?
I have the same problem once I started to ride my tri bike. My solution was to use the Sweat Gutr. Its a rubber headband that channels your forehead sweat to the sides of you face so that its not in your eyes. I look like a dork with it on so I just wear it slightly below my helmet and it hides it. It works like a charm! http://www.sweatgutr.com/#ultimate-sweatband
I’m a heavy sweater and noticed the same thing, but only when running. I noticed that if I wear a hat it acts like a sweat band and draws sweat either backwards or out towards the brim and has completely solved the problem for me. There is also no better feeling during a hot race then dumping cold water or ice in your hat then putting it on!
This may not work for you but this worked for me. My old helmet had the sweat pad running horizontally across my forehead, once it got soaked with sweat the sweat would drip down inside my glasses. The helmet I have now has the sweat pads running vertically up my forehead, I find the sweat evaporates much better and I no longer get sweat dripping inside my glasses.
I’m a heavy sweater and wear a running cap to draw the sweat away from my forehead and out to the end of the peak.
As far as sunglasses go, I cant wear any that have a bottom frame. The frame sits on the top of my cheekbones and the sweat just gathers there. With frameless glasses there is a gap between the lens and my face that allows any sweat to just run down my face.
Also, Oakley Jawbones are just about the ugliest sunglasses ever made, probably only beaten by the new POC ones.
Count me in with the group of heavy sweaters with foggy sunglasses while running. The one thing that helped me was the Oakley Nano cleaner which will make the sweat bead up and roll off the lens leaving no streaks. I have been using it for the last year or so and it works great; need to reapply about every other month or so depending on use and sweat. Also makes it easy to rinse off your glasses on the fly with a water bottle or cup of water at the aid stations if needed.
A combination of things alleviated this problem for me:
-a helmet where the cushioning/pads run vertically (Scott split)
-sunglasses without a top frame (smith pivlock v2)
I still get the occasional drop of sweat but it’s rare.
