Suunto Ambit3 Removes ANT+

Well I guess we will be seeing more Power Meters and sensors move to Bluetooth Smart.

From DC:
The singular item that was removed however is ANT+ sensor support. The unit does not include ANT+ support. They decided that for the modes they were looking to utilize it would have required two chips being in the unit (a separate one for ANT+ and one for Bluetooth Smart) – which would have required additional architecture/battery considerations.

Seems like this might mute some of the criticism of Polar for not supporting ANT.

If Ambit supports BT Power Meters like Powertap and Stages right now then they have a HUGE leg up on Polar
.

I think Polar has already said they are working on supporting BT power meters with the both the v800 and v650. I believe they are timing the update to correspond with the change to BT for the Polar/Look Pedal System.

I think the tide will turn when one of the big players SRM or Quarq begins to utilize BT

What power meters do they think the majority of people are using that they feel taking away ANT+ doesn’t matter?

I know I have a Quarq and a Power2Max and they only support ANT+.

Suunto will start selling in September, about the same time when Polar has planned support for BT power meters.

The Ambit3 will be available in September and Polar has scheduled power meter support for September, so no difference there.

I hope you are not asking me. I don’t even own a bike.
