Supposed Pet bite - how to go about?

Neighbor takes down fence I put up because she thinks it’s ugly . Doesn’t finish job so obviously my dog getting loose all the time via haphazardly put up temporary boards.

We go over for bbq. Everyone but me is drunk. I go home since I don’t like to be around drunkards. There is leftover food which dogs go after including mine. Neighbors dog small, mine medium, and a visitor had aggressive large dog. I’m not there to see this, “witnesses” claimed my dog bit the small dog in neck (he has never attacked any animal, even cats).

Neighbor seems to shrug it off. 2 months later takes dog to ER as dog supposedly got infection from the bite. She wants half of medical bill, which is $2k…

Where do I go with this

If you feel responsible, pay them.

If you don’t want to pay or don’t feel responsible, maybe tell your neighbor to take you to small claims court.

The latter will obviously put blood in the water between you and the neighbor, so think about if you want to have a neighbor that hates you as it might be a bad karma experience day in and day out.

Two months later? Infections from bites show up within 2 to maybe five days after a bite in humans. I’m not a vet but I can’t see how an infection 2 months later can be linked to an interaction with your dog.

I’d politely ask to speak to the vet in question to confirm they think the bite is responsible. If yes, then pay.
And don’t let your dog be outside with other dogs without your supervision in the future (IMHO…)…

Could be that the infection has been there all along and just hasn’t been treated? Not sure…

I suppose but one would think one wouldn’t leave something festering for 2 months. Maybe that is why it cost 2K to fix it? Maybe if he attended to the dog’s need promptly it might have cost one or two simple vet visits to fix with antibiotics? Like a few hundred not a few thousand.

Yep, another good reason to have a chat with the vet involved.

Agreed

Thanks for your responses folks, it’s something I suspected was strange…also sorry on posting here, thought it was going to LR

This is exactly what happened to my dog one time. He is a Weim/Aussie mix. We went over to their farm for dinner one evening and I brought my dog along. He has a blast with horses, chickens, etc. Well we are walking around the property and they neighbors puppies run into his property and up to my dog. They are happy to play with each other. The puppies start to run back to where they came from. My dog follows them and I think the mother dog sees this as aggressive. My dog doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. I see her running towards my dog and recall him and he starts to come back to me. In hind sight I shouldn’t have let him run off with the puppies in the first place. The mother dog comes up to him and he just plops on his back and exposes his belly to show submissiveness. This other dog had about twenty pounds on mine. He is about 60 lbs at this time. She tears into his neck and then chest. I sprint over and punted that dog, and her puppies by the time I arrived, off of mine. I start looking for any signs of wounds on him. I find one on his chest. I almost missed it as it was not bleeding at the time. Once I noticed it, it did start to bleed. I googled the emergency vet, about forty-five minutes away. I called and told them we were on the way. Six hours later I get my dog back from surgery. He had the one major gash on his chest and three puncture wounds. Two on the back of his neck and the other near his butt. All in all $428 for the emergency vet bill. The had to open up the chest wound by nearly triple to clean out the infection. They washed out the puncture wounds but did not open them any further or close them up. Just left them as is to let them drain. He was put on two week of antibiotics and daily cleaning of the wounds and never had a sign of infection. Thrown up some pictures…

If the owner is coming back two months later I would be very skeptical. One, they should have taken their dog to the vet that evening or the next morning. I would ask them about when they initially took their dog to the vet and what was done at that time. I would also ask who the vet was so I could go and ask them myself. The only thing that I can see why they are coming back this long after the event is that everything is all said and done with and the dog is healthy now. If that isn’t the case I would be asking a lot of questions. If the fence was on your property and she just took it down without permission/notice that is pretty bad. That I think is a separate issue though. You can always tell here the fence was there for a reason.

I would investigate the vet story a bit before making any decisions.

Wow that is worse. So neighbor got screwed by vet some how with pricing it seems

Put the fence back up on your side of the property. Do it 6 inches on your property line and she can’t take it down.

she tore down my fence I built and some how claims its on her property too… I dont want to go to court arguing things like this but it seems I should have in the first place.

Mods, can you please move this crap to LR?

Veterinarian here, it would be beyond extremely uncommon for a bite wound to abscess on this timeline. Maybe a foxtail, splinter, or foreign object in the wound, but not as you describe.

Ask that they have the veterinarian write a letter stating their profession opinion is that it is this from the past bite specifically from your dog, nothing else, no other possibilities for cause. That will never happen. Even if likely, no veterinarian is going to commit to such declarative statements.

As a side note, you are not the client of the veterinarian and they should not talk to you or discuss this dog’s case as a non-owner. You are unlikely to have any benefit from reaching out to them directly.
