What sunscreen do you you like while racing an ironman? Do you apply it in both T1 & T2?
I have always had success with Scape (just don’t put it on your forehead). I usually apply in the morning and do not have to reapply throughout the event. If you are real sensitive to the sun or just want more protection, you could always have their sunscreen stick in a pocket, etc.
I have tried the sunscreen crew before but felt I was always in such a hurry that the application was very thick and seemed to cause me to overheat.
Unfortunately Scape is out of business.
I like Neutrogena Wet. I apply the lotion in the AM, then use the spray in T1 and again in T2 if it’s really sunny.
I’m surprised that there isn’t a brand of sunscreen that everybody uses. Do people like the spray kind?
No Ad 30 for me. It’s cheap.
I have used Coppertone Sport and Bullfrog Ultra
.
Kinesys is really good - downside is that it’s sorta expensive.
I really love Scape Face stick. It’s the only sunscreen I could use on my face without feeling like I’ve got a rubber glove on. Bummed they are out of business. I’ve got one stick in the package still that I’ll hoard until IMCZ.
I use Planet Sun during training but only if it’s not really hot and humid. I find it is a little heavy and I have to be really careful not to put too much on.
I use Waterman’s on my face sparingly! That stuff is serious and excellent for Hawaii.
In T1/T2 I use Neutrogenna Spray - Fresh Cooling or whatever is 50+ at Costco. I use that for neck/legs/head. Only in 70.3 distance or above.
I typically train/race in arm coolers or DeSoto Cool Wings due to the Hawaii sun. I will spray arms in T1 before I put on cool wings and then not do anything to them for the rest of the day.
For a day of swimming or paddling or ocean fun - Planet Sun is PERFECT.
I started using Endurance Shield last year. Company was started by pro triathletes Jarrod Shoemaker and Alicia Kaye.

Clear Zinc…bar style (like a deodorant bar)
I am very sun sensitive and this is the best for me…fine in the face, around the eyes, and it won’t stain your kit

Did anyone ever find out what happened to Scape? They seemed to be doing fine, then bam. No more product.
Many threads on this already. Planet Sun wins, Kona tested…no others reign as supreme. Any future trips to hell I’ll be wearing Planet Sun. If the Devil had it on before he moved there–he wouldn’t be as red. He’d be more like a Canadian…white.
+1

No wonder I haven’t been able to find Scape. I loved that stuff. Bummed they are out of business.
I’m currently using Endurance Shield, which rubs in so quickly that I was worried it wouldn’t work, but haven’t burned yet with it (including during my last IM).
ETA: forgot to post my tip for avoiding a burn on race day: apply the night before the race and again on race morning. Re-apply in T1 if you are very fair because I think the bike is where you can really burn your back and arms if you’re not careful.
We sell sunscreen, and my family uses Headhunter. Pretty epic stuff:
There is lots of choice.
The key is* application*.
Sunscreen is best applied to just washed, but dry skin, several hours before exposure. Do this and you will get maximum protection from whatever you use. If you wait, until just before racing, when skin is now oily/sweaty, you’ll only get a fraction of the advertised spf.
So people apply sunscreen before putting on their wetsuit?
So people apply sunscreen before putting on their wetsuit?
Well, some apply the sunscreen directly to their wetsuit. Neoprene’s spf isn’t as high as you think it is.
Always look to the EWG sunscreen database, otherwise, you’re wasting time and money.

Yes I used the spray one and it is quiet effective. You need to try once
