Having recently gone to a buzz cut for ease of maintenance, I have noticed that I have started getting a sunburnt head on long rides. I never even considered this would happen before. I guess I’m getting burnt through the vents.
Has anyone ever had this happen before and what did you do about it? I’m not that keen to attempt rubbing sunscreen through my short hair. Used to wear a bandana underneath but now I’m doing 5-8hour IM training rides in temps possibly exceeding 100 I would rather not keep my head any warmer than it needs to be!
PS I’m not bald, not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Being hair challenged, (not bald, but darn close) I would recommend using the sunscreen. I have used a product specifically made for hair and scalp. I can’t remember the exact name, but it is made by Coppertone. Found it at the drug store with all the other sunscreens. Other companies may make it also. Comes in a spray bottle. SPF 15. Spray it on, rub into scalp, and you are ready to go. I haven’t had any problem with it burning my eyes when I sweat as long as I give it 5-10 minutes to dry.
I’ve got a bald fair skin friend who smears his head with a number 30 sunscreen in summer. Your solution is really quite simple - just let your hair grow back.
You might try the Coppertone Sport Gel sunscreen. I’d imagine that this would be much easier to rub in than a normal cream lotion. I first discovered this before I started shaving my legs, as it was much easier to rub onto hairy legs.
As a “headshaver” I use Headsweats. They make a simple white cap out of coolmax fabric that’s very comfortable for me to wear under my helmet, even during long rides on very hot days.
