I was going to mention this is in the wetsuit thread but thought it was a separate issue…has anyone had issues with certain sunscreens staining their clothes?
I had this awesome new white jersey and it got all rust coloured from my new sunscreen. It was CVS store brand. (ok so I buy cheap but why not?) To their credit they asked me to estimate how much all my clothing was worth and they sent a cheque to cover the entire amount.
But what sunscreens do you use that you can use with white/light colours? Im a little wary now. I am concerned with good protection and how long it lasts, but I really do not want more clothes ruined.
i’ve never had that happen before, and i’m a sunblock nerd. (meaning, i wear it just about every single day year round and am terrified of leather skin. so i research the stuff and know the brands, etc)
take the money and run. BTW, neutrogena is about the best stuff i’ve ever used. it’s well worth the extra money, considering your generic brand ruins your training clothes!
Did you put your clothing in the dryer?
I’m trying to figure out how sunscreen could chemically do that.
I use coopertone sunscreen without any issues.
If you have a problem with rust colored stains it could be…well…rust! Or something similar. Take some plain lemon juice, soak it in this for about 15 minutes, then add a good dose of hydrogen peroxide. If it’s rust that stain should disappear like magic.
For sunscreens, get the spray on Bullfrog stuff. It works awesome, dries instantly, is non-greasy, lets your skin sweat (unlike the slather of most lotions), and is pretty cheap for how long one of the little bottles lasts (half a year for me). It doesn’t take a lot of it either.
I use the coppertone spray-on sun screen and have had it stain my white running shirts as well. My problem was, I was sprying it on with the shirt on so the spray also got on the shirt.
I agree the neutrogena is great sunscreen for the face.
don’t know what kind of sunscreen i was using but i also have a white Desoto cycling jersey that has a rust-colored colar - never in the dryer, tried all kinds of things to get it out, no luck.
i do still wear it though, i like the jersey…
could also be the sunblock reacting with your sweat n’ stuff? Don’t you find the sun goes through white clothes the most anyway? I get all kinds of lovely brown stains around my white run cap even with frequent washing - hence the reason I wear colored jerseys. Besides, what do you care? I’ve got blood, grease, grass stains all over my stuff. Its workout clothes - not wedding wear…
put my stuff in the dryer? are you kidding? good lord I never do that. And I also am a total sunblock nerd. I do not care that I am accused of putting on my ‘kabuki’ makeup before a ride/run, Id rather not be one of those super totally leathery types: good from far but far from good. y’know?
but in this case it ruined my clothes and some others have had some similar effects. DO I really have to do ALL Neutrogena? I DO love the stuff but it is kinda pricey. I once bought some SPF 30 on sale that was medium tint and I looked like one of those tan beds whores. Im a goth looking chick. Even the neutrogena medium did not work for me. The best is though my boyfriend wears it before a bike as I make him put on spf and I keep telling him he looks ‘great’ but really he looks like a Jr. George Hamilton, even with the medium tint. heehee but at least it gets him to put on spf 30 on his face. And I get rid of the stuff that does not work on me.
Do you use any type of acne medication? Stuff like Oxy 10 or others with bezoyle peroxide? I had this happen with a white Zoot top last year. I used some adult acne cream (don’t remember the name) the night before my ride. I did not thoroughly wash my face the next morning before the ride. Some of the stuff was still in my pores. When I started to sweat, I wiped my face on my jersey. The medication turned it rust color.
Kitty, for a frequently reapplied, full-body sunscreen, what do you recommend? I know the Neutrogena is excellent, but if you were to take a beach vacation, and were in a situation where you’re in and out of the water, reapplying quite frequently, etc. Anything that’s cheaper, but still good?
I’ve used Banana Boat Sport, Surf and Baby with no problems with any of my jerseys, but their not white.
I used the ‘Baby’ for IMAZ and my white DSS forza skin cooler jersey is still white.

Thought I’d ask. I had a girl friend of mine keep complaining she was putting on weight. When I asked why she said her bike gear was getting tighter the more she road. She was putting her jersey’s in the dryer. Ruined them all. Strangely she knew enough to hang her shots. Go figure.
I’m not sure what to tell you. Does your boyfriend have a similar issue? Maybe you can test your stuff out on him first.
I never liked the ones with tanner either, makes me look like a fool.
You may want to re-consider your colors.
White is difficult to keep clean. During an event I have seen more than one or two people with unusual stains on their white/yellow/light colored material.
Early last year (2006) I read a short article about clothing colors that reflect UV rays better than other colors. The best color was royal/medium blue (not light blue).
Royal blue probably won’t show the stains as easily as the light colors.
I use the Neutrogena continuous “cool” spray. It lasts longer than other continuous sprays.
This year will be the first year mexoryl can be legally sold as a sunblock in the US. This compound is the best and most expensive sunblock. I haven’t seen any continuous spray versions, however. If you use this you can wave goodbye to that “tan” look…
