I am going on vacation next week and I need a good book to read. Any suggestions?
There is this fantastic new book I just bought for someone else about the incredible free-diving records, and subsequent fatal accident, of this eccentric couple- damn, cannot think of the name of it to save myself.
It is utterly fascinating though… I read a few pages, thought, “This is super cool…” and bought it for my G/F to take on a trip with her.
Highly recommended. -Sorry I can’t remember the title.
Have you read “The Long Walk” by Slavomir Ramovitz (?).
I’ve been reading a ton. Recent favorites…
Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genious - Dave Eggers
Dracula - Bram Stoker
White Noise - Don DeLeo

On the “Fess Up” thread, it sounded like you don’t have time to read ![]()
Graz, fess up… are you reading about having sex!
For vacation reading, you might try:
Gold in the Water - has been mentioned in previous ST posts, great read especially w/ the Olympics coming up.
DaVinci Code by Dan Brown - you can get sucked into this just like a Tom Clancy or John Grisham book. A bit far-fetched, but still a decent read.
I was going to post this identical question today…I’m dying for some good suggestions.
LOL! Nice…
LAtely, I have not been reading AS much…that’s for sure.
Running with the Buffaloes (by Chris Lear (sp?) I think). Try the library. Haven’t been able to find it at the bookstore. Fun read about college cross-country running.
I agree with colin. The divinchi code is the best I’ve read in awhile. His previous book Angels and Demons in awesome as well.
i agree with the others… da vinci code, angels and demons, running with the buffaloes… all excellent books.
Along the same lines as Gold in the Water, check out “Four Champions, One Gold Medal” by Chuck Warner. Amazon doesn’t have it but you can get it online from the publisher, swiminfo.com. It’s about the years leading up to the Montreal Olympics and the three Americans (Tim Shaw, Brian Goodell, Bobby Hackett) and the Australian (Steve Holland) who were fighting for supremacy in the 1500 (and in distance swimming as a whole). It also waxes philosophical about why we haven’t had good American distance swimmers since. (The book was written in '99 before the mini-resurgence in US distance swimming started.) The writing is not as good as Gold in the Water but if you’re willing to look past that, the material is much, much better. The parts about Tim Shaw are worth the price of admission by themselves. Required reading for any endurance athlete.
I’m most of the way through it now. I’ll post a book report when I finish.
I think the book you are talking about is “THE DIVE”. I just bought it this afternoon. I remember reading about the couple in Sport Illustrated a while back.
A book i just finished was “The Perfect Mile” about the race to break the 4 minute mile. Amazing what it took for Bannister to accomplish it. He was going to med school the whole time while training to beat the barrier.
That’s it!
Charlie Wilson’s War, now in paperback. This non-fiction book beats the heck out of Tom Clancy, etc. Great story of how Rep. Wilson inconjuction the CIA and the Afghani’s beat down the Soviet Union.
He was born in Cuba, and goes by the name of Pepin…(not sure if spelling is correct).yep…this guy is incredible and when he has set the records…holy cow.MOO…crazy…fantastic…sad about his wife…
