I’ve recently cleaned up my diet a whole lot and now do the big breakfast, medium lunch, small dinner thing. The thing is that at about half past 9 in the evenings i find myself with major sugar cravings. I am 20 years old and have always had a sweet tooth so the lower amounts of sugar in my diet is a pretty big change.
Any tips on what i could change so i dont end up eating a load of crap just before bed?
Just don´t.
And have patience with letting your body and brain become detoxicated from the sugar. It’s hard and seems meaningless and depressing at times but might be worth it in the end…
Good luck!
I agree with the above but also add in sweet vegetables to your diet. Roasted carrots, sweet potato ect. When you get a craving pause, take a big drink of water then re asses the craving, lots of times you just need water.
Good for you on cleaning up your diet. I’m in a similar position. I’m 22 years old and I eat a healthy vegetarian diet with the exception of a sweet tooth which I frequently indulge. Like 3+ desserts every day (cake, squares, muffins, cookies etc. - mostly homemade). I try to take in most of the sugary food immediately before or after workouts. Maybe less bad?
I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but I’m wondering if this is a problem. I have a very low BMI of <=19, train~20hrs/week and I struggle to maintain weight. If weight loss is not a concern, what would I stand to gain from cutting sugary stuff out of my diet? Changes in metabolism or body composition?
I also get cravings in the evening. Try having a piece of fruit and something with fat like cheese, 2%+ yogurt, PB or nuts. I’ve also learnt that on days where I get hungry a hour after dinner, it’s best to eat more right away rather than slamming another meal at 9:30pm.
when I have sugar cravings and know I’m not hungry, I turn to herbal caffeine free teas. I find a nice mint or the like takes the edge off. I have a nice vanilla one that makes me nice and sleepy too.
I agree with the herbal tea. I always have that if I get a bit hungry later at night.
If you get a sugar craving, have an apple or a banana.
But as you transition away from the sweets, you are going to go through a bit of a withdrawal. You will just have to sweat it out. It will go away.
A nice amaretto rocks?
ETA: Sorry, I guess you need to hold off on that one a bit. At least you don’t crave BBQ.
Here are some different things I use to kill my craving (one of them, not all):
-one spoon of greek yogurt
-sugar-free Jello
-one small spoon of almond butter
-chocolate protein shake (powder+water)
-decaf coffee
-handful of berries
-green tea
-water overload
.
If you don’t slip:
After 2-3 days, the cravings will lessen.
After 2 weeks, they should be gone.
make sure you are getting enough calories.
You can also try eating something tart and filling - a grapefruit or plain yogurt is good.
another option is to not limit your sugar so much. Fruit man!!! For me all I need is a real good apple or orange or something like that and I’m good to go sugar wise. Also, (this may not be the answer for hardcore diet people) eat sugar directly after your largest workout of the day → there are benefits to this and maybe will help alleviate the cravings you feel later in the day…
Im the same way. Used to eat a fat bowl of cookie dough ice cream every night. The obvious is just not buying it, not having it around. After the first week, you wont even think about it.
I am 23, recently did the same for my diet. Some of these have been discussed already, but these worked for me:
-sweet potatoes (can make really good fries or make them whipped)
-LOTS of fruit (apples, strawberries, whatever is in season at the local farmers market)
-greek yogurt with honey (put honey on anything, really)
-when it’s hot, I make real fruit popsicles (you can find recipes online for great tasting popsicles with simple fruit as the only ingredient. Delicious, and don’t feel bad about eating them at all)
x2. Have struggled with this a lot. Looking forward to the good suggestions and thanks for posting.
BS I am always thinking about ice cream!
- Eat more at dinner. I am not familiar with this small dinner thing. What is that about?
- Have someone else do your grocery shopping. No sugar in the house. No sugar in the mouth.
- Eat fruit. Mangoes.
Buy a box of sugar free cookies, eat the whole thing, grab a big water bottle, and then go wait by the toilet.
In about 30 minutes you will lose more weight than you ingested and easily kick any “wants” for sugary things ever again…ever. Tell whomever you live with that the sounds are kind of normal and that it is the similiar chant you have after a hard night of drinking. A lot of promising to god about the things you will never do again.
according to my dietician friend (don’t shoot the messenger) you should eat as much as you can at breakfast >600 calories to kick start you matabolism and fuel your first workout, nail your post workout nutrition, then lunch should be 50/50 carbs/protein. next workout, post workout nutrition, and then (again supposedly) dinner should be mostly protein. I don’t know if this is right but its working for me
I am a candy-a-holic but I found that when a craving hits, I simply walk to the bathroom and brush my teeth. Oddly enough it works. After my teeth are brushed I forget about wanting to eat icecream etc. But I also think it is important to give in to your cravings sometimes too.
Eat fruit ( as much as you want) as dessert about 15 min to 1 hour after your dinner.
You’ll be full and the slow release will carry you through bedtime.
Hi!
I’ve found that the more good fat I eat in the morning, the less sugar cravings I have in the evening. On top of breakfast, I’ll eat avocado and/or nuts (LOTS) – this has been the ticket for me!
