i’ve only done this video once, last night. so i’m trying to give a quick overview of it for anyone that is thinking about buying it.
i have all the sufferfest videos on dvd and love most of them. i would rank them for me in the following order: 1.fight club 2. angels 3. local hero 4. the hunted 5. downward spiral 6. revolver.
the guys at the sufferfest have been improving with the quality of videos. the music has been good and entertaining. the “encouragement” they give is also entertaining.
i’ve had “a very dark place” for a couple weeks but haven’t done it b/c i raced B2B and my legs (and maybe more mentally) weren’t ready for a hard effort.
the quality of the video is probably the best of what they’ve done so far. there’s no overlap of the same “attack” and no overlap of any sort. so that was something that i liked.
the music was good. they went with a little more hard rock than electronic, which i like. that being said, i grew to love some of the music in fight club.
the 5x4minute segments went by quickly. well, the first 2 minutes were fast then the third minute wasn’t bad, the last minute was not fun. but that was expected.
i liked the “people/breakaways” they picked out. personally, i liked the last one, up col du glandon/croix de fer b/c i rode that last may. it’s like i could relive that ride. following cancellara is always tough and continue to be amazed at how strong that guy is.
the rest periods(they say 3min but closer to 4minutes) provide a nice back drop via cyclefilm.
the efforts are supposed to be above FTP. they give you 8-9/10 effort where 7/10 is your, or at least that’s what i use, as FTP. i averaged between 105% and 110% for the 5 efforts.
i’ve used “fight club,” which is 6min at FTP, 1min rest, then 4x7min at FTP ((or higher), the video says 6:30 but it’s longer) and 3min rest, as a vo2 max type workouts.
personally, i like “fight club” better. i like the change of TT to the road race. i like the music in “fight club” a little more. i’ll need to do “a very dark place” a few more times before i really get a solid feel for it.
“a very dark place” is worth buying. it’s well put together, good music, editing is best they’ve done, and it gets you through some tough sets.
I got an email about their newest video ,Hell hath no fury and it looks good. Has some pretty hot chicks in it. It might take some of the suffering out of it not having to look at sweaty guys the while time.
Yup, I am much more interested in Hell Hath No Fury as I don’t need another VO2max video. But they mentioned in their ad email what I am most worried about, how do they make 2X20 minute intervals interesting. What ever they do, I am sure it is better than the video that came with the Kurt of a bunch of poeple riding trainers in a car dealership.
Hot chicks? That doesn’t sound like hell at all!
it’s a 6minute rest interval between the 2x20. can always fast forward to make it 2minutes.
Try dating more than one ata a time…You’ll find out what hell is
.
I agree with your review of a very dark place. I used fight club as a comparison as well. the workout feels similar to fight club, but the small things, music and video perhaps put it above the others for me. I almost agree totally with your list of favs as well although i would switch hunted and local hero. also at this moment dark place is number 1. could be because i have done fight club more than any others and a dark place is so fresh still. very excited for the new one downloading now!
lol! Now that I’m married with two daughters, I’m pretty much going to be in multiple levels of hell for the rest of my life…
I loved “A Very Dark Place”. Definitely feeling it by the end and it went by faster than I thought. They varied things nicely in there, so it wasn’t exactly the same for every one. I need to try “Fight Club” again for a better comparison. Had all kinds of bike setup problems during that one. There is a noticeable difference between them in that FC is more all out attacks and Dark Place was change of pace.
Can’t wait to get the new one!
Probably…When my buddy had his fourth daughter he built a bathroom in the garage.
