Subluxation of the fibular head

I have a subluxation of the fibular head in my right knee. It is a result of the sport injury from 4 years ago. I am dealing with it for all this time and it is limiting my ability to do sports. Basically after walking or running, not necessarily long distances I start to have pain in the area of fibula attachment, there is a lot of snapping and clicking as well. I have visited many doctors but was advised to don’t do a surgery because of peroneal nerve is passing by this area and surgery could be risky. I am doing some nerve flossing and hamstring strengthening exercises but it does not seem to help. I also heard about prolotherapy treatment that is supposed to tighten fibula attachment. Does anybody has any experience with this treatment? Any feedback is appreciated I saw one post on this forum from couple of years ago. Would appreciate feedback from somebody who had similar problem and overcome it with some sort of treatment. Thanks.

You might try prolotherapy if you can find a doctor who is familiar with it and then get the injections done with CT guidance (as to get the syndesmosis of the fibular head and not the nerve). This is only a wiki reference but it is what I’m talking about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prolotherapy
Othewise surgery with a surgeon who has experience and success.
Good luck with it.

Have you tried taping or wearing a strap right below the head?

Is the prolotherapy risky since it goes close to the nerve?

No I have not try it. I think I know what you have in mind but not exactly sure.

Chiropractic may be a good option as well, without seeing you personally, I have had patients with similar complaints that had a lot of relief with a trial of adjustments to the fibular head and Active Release Technique to the peroneal muscles.

If its a ligamentous laxity issue though I would x2 on considering Prolo. I’ve had patients get injections into their lower back right approximate to other peripheral nerves so I don’t think proximity is a contraindication, not my scope though. It does hurt like H**l from what I hear.

I definitely would like to learn more about the adjustments you have mentioned, and how it can be done. I understand it is all chiropractic help only. I would appreciate any reference. I have heard about prolo very recently, so don’t have much knowledge about it and potential risks. Basically the more snapping and clicking I have in the Fibula head the more pain results from it. Sometimes is better sometimes worst but pretty much every sort of exercise or even walk results in some sort of discomfort.

Find a sports oriented chiropractor who is very comfortable with extremity adjustments in your area, if they are certified in ART even better.

Lots of this may sound a bit like greek, but here’s a general reference to the intent:

I am not an orthopedist and do not have prolo references readily available. Perhaps a D.O./M.D. on this board who is familiar can contribute.
