Stretching quads = numb quads?

My quads and psoas are freak show kinda tight, and beating up my knees. So my PT has assigned some hardcore sweat-producing stretching.

Here’s the nutty part. On just my right side, part of my thigh has gone nearly numb, and stayed that way for a week. It starts at the knee and goes about 2/3 of the way to the hip, and is from about the middle of the IT band around to the top of the quad. It’s not completely numb, just extremely dulled. I can pull leg hairs - which should be shaved, I know - and that pinch feels normal. It’s more like the layer below it is numb. I didn’t even notice until I brushed up against sonething and didn’t feel it.

Anyone ever heard of this? I see my PT on Tues.

Interesting that you mention that, because I’ve had the exact same problem but on my left quad. At the time, what I was told by PT was that if I put my finger up my anus, the numbness would disappear. Something to do with the muscles in the pelvis relaxing and stop compressing the nerves going down the legs. Hope this helps.

Does it matter which finger or which hand you use?

Dude, seriously? I don’t want to know how he/they ever figured out that method works.

How the heck is stretching sweat producing?

I’ve had this. It’s taken a few months to go from full-on numbness to slightly numb. I think the stretches are just irritating a nerve.

If you aren’t sweatin’, you ain’t stretchin’ hard enough (says my PT). That sh*t hurts, man.

Please tell me you aren’t stretching that hard without some kind of 10-20 minute (preferable more) warmup activity…please please tell me that…

I’m telling you exactly that. :-). The PT doesn’t think it’s needed. And when stretching 3x per day, it wouldn’t be practical. I do loosen up some first usually, and then gradually build the intensity of the stretch over a few “reps”.

You have a PT that is having you do intense, deep static stretches and doesn’t believe a w/u is needed? Hrm.

And PNF stretching.

The good news is he has a PhD in PT, and is highly respected.

interesting. especially with the PNF, i’d expect some warmups. If you get a spare moment, can you PM me the progressions that he uses? It could be something that I could use for martial arts warmups when teaching, we don’t get much time to stretch/warmup in short classes.

Where can I learn more about these stretches?

it is a pinched nerve…plus you should always warm up the muscle before stretching… just because one has a Ph.d does not make them the smartest or the best…

I’ll reply here rather than pm.

W/u is simply a 500m brisk walk from the car, followed by a walk up some stairs, or a few squats. He doesn’t have a planned w/u. But then he also usually does some mega-painful massage first, and then we stretch.

Stretches have changed over time. Major ones were…

Lying on back on table, one knee held to chest, other off the table, press down the knee, push ankle toward butt. Obviously requires assistance.

Also same stretch but with the “other” leg straight up stretching hammy instead of knee to chest.

Knee on sofa, leg straight back, abs tight, upper body upright. For the hip flexors.

Knee on pillow at edge of sofa, foot up and resting on sofa cushion (sofa is behind you). Other foot is a few feet ahead (you’re kneeling on one knee). Alternate leaning forward to stretch hip, leaning back to stretch quad as butt approaches heel. Abs tight, hips forward, no bend forward at waist.

Lots of TP roller time as well.

Is the first part of this stretch for the psoas? If not, which is? I’m at work so can’t try these now, but will when I get home for my tight hips. Think I’ll skip the prostate massage from the other poster.

Yes, for the psoas. The key is to keep that upper body tight and upright. Flex your abs and you’ll feel that psoas go way up into your trunk. Ouch.

 DING DING!!

Passive warmup, but still a warmup. You’re not really stretching “cold” as I thought you were (Walk in off the street sit down and start stretching).

PLEASE respond to this even though it has been years since its post

I am a first time user and talking about this post:

I have the exact same thing! I am 26 male cyclist. Its been numb for a number of weeks now in EXACTLY the way you describe it. What ever happened? Were you diagnosed? How did you resolve this? In how much time? When I stretch it it starts ‘burning’, a very wierd sensation. BTW I am tight everywhere. hams, hips, calfs… i have snapping or clicking on the backside of my knees, maybe calf tendons or ham tendons that inflame when i ride, moved seat up…

do you have any wisdom or insight? thank you!!! The more detail the better. thanks

I’d also be interested to hear more about this. I am currently getting dry needling on my left quad and when my PT puts the needles in on the upper vastus lateralis I can’t feel a thing and so far it has not responded much to electric stimulation., either He thinks it is likely a lower back issue so he has been doing some needling there as well. I think this dead muscle issue has really thrown off the balance of my pedal stroke and may explain why I have been alot slower the last few years with similar training. Again, any insights would be much appreciated.

Hey, I’ve been doing lots of ‘internet’ research since I made my post a few hours ago.

I’ve come up with this, for me at least, as the most likely culprit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meralgia_paraesthetica

Ok, its Wikipedia, but it’s a start. Strengthening lower back and abs seems to be a no brainer. But maybe surgery is necessary.

Tell me more about whats going on with you. When I stretch it, it burns and gets even more numb. I think that b/c my quad is so damn tight my hipflexor is over working and is always sore and the back side of my leg is overworking and has developed some snapping clicking irritations.

Active Release therapy and acupuncture will be my second and third steps after a meet with a neurologist to pin it down. For me, i can pin it down when it started this february or so when I started doing weights for the first time in a few years… too much to fast… maybe pinched a nerve then and it hasnt recorvered yet. all conjecture but its something.

anyway, maybe somebody has experience, solutions, results or something worthwhile. best
