Thanks!
They are unusual and usually occur as a “nutcracker” type compression effect between the calcaneus and the forefoot with loading. They tend to heel VERY slowly, unfortunately, and I usually completely cast and offload with crutches if possible if confirmed on MRI.
Other differentials are cuboid tunnel syndrome and a subluxing cuboid (at the CC joint).
Good luck!
I see you’re just an hour away in Cinci (I’m in Louisville). The podiatrist I visited (Mauser) was chosen at random. How do I know if he’s competent? Do you take United?

Was he referred by your PCP? Board Certified? All helpful. Don’t know him. Probably fine if the MRI shows a definitive stress fx, not much to be done but rest unfortunately. If not, now things get more complicated. Yes, on UHC, but I’m sure he is competent.

Not sure if that means board certified. Referred by a friend who is an OBGYN, but he (DPM) had no idea who she was. If it’s cuboid syndrome, I guess I’ll be asking some specific questions regarding his manipulative technique experience.
Thanks a lot for your insight. I really appreciate it!
I had this too!
Nope, you won’t find much on line about a cuboid stress fracture. Just do what they tell you!! Stay off it. I didn’t have to wear the boot because mine was a “stress reaction” you could see a very distinctive radiolucency in the cuboid area of the MRI but pretty much it’s treated the same way as a full blown stress fracture. 12 weeks and you can be re-introduced to an ellipitical, then you can slowly resume running. They say 8 but be prepared for 12.
Sucks anyway around it. Surprised I didn’t grind through my nightguard watching my races fall in the gutter and my training
go to hell. At least you got your IM in!!!
Thanks for the insight rroof. Just wanted to follow-up with you. MRI was unimpressive - no evidence of fracture or even ligament/tendon damage. I read up on cuboid syndrome after you suggested it as an alt dx and he said he had little experience treating or dx it. No subluxation was evident to him on xray or mri, but he was aware that it’s not always visible. I asked about the whip or other manipulations and he hadn’t done any. Nice guy and I respect that he didn’t pretend to know it all. He did more research last night and called today. He offered to attempt the manipulation, but I declined.
Since my first appt last week, I feel much better. The cuboid area is still tender to the touch, but I’m walking well and improving. I’m going to avoid running a couple more weeks and see what happens. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
wow, I’m 4 days late.
Calcium! and (((hugs)))
Thanks for the follow up. Very good that you don’t have a cuboid stress fx (again, unlikely diagnosis anyway).
Cuboid syndrome is VERY often missed by even skilled specialists and virtually unheard of by most others.
Best of luck to ya’!
