Stop gut rot at the end of the bike?

Cranked out another 100 in 95 degrees yesterday. Felt goodish but when it was time to run I was blasted as expected. But into my run I felt better but the worst part is my stomach and lack of interest in fueling. My fueling strategy on the bike was good but by the time you hit the run your just done and sick of everything I have tried. Most of all the gut is just not happy. So what do most of you do? Switch fueling sources entirely? I am mostly chomps and gels on the bike and then gels on the run but yesterday I was not having it…

For ironman, almost strictly coke and water for the whole run.

Zippy

i had the same feeling at Temblant last year (first IM). came off the bike (waffles, cliff bars, water, perform, bananas) and felt like my stomach was going to blow up. had no nutritional plan going in. kept experimenting this year until i read about infinit nutrition and it’s working well for me for the past month after i gave it a try.

I have found that I drastically underestimate my sodium replenishment needs and in relation to the amount of sugar that I ingest further increases my sodium demand. A sodium shortage makes me feel ill after a several hours of racing.

osmolality. There’s your answer.

So in general you think I under estimated my salt intake? I was push release tablets and endurolytes but fined I need more salt when I cramp up which I was not doing on this long ride but that screwed up my stomach?

is it sodium or is it too high a concentration of CHO and you need more water?

Could be… Back to thinking about building a big calorie bottle… Tried perpetium and it was ok, other ideas?

your sugar concentration is probably too high. Add in gels, sports drinks etc and suddenly you’re looking at a 8,9,10% or more concentration which doesn’t do anything for gastric emptying.

I have no idea about your salt intake.

Yes I think you right on, it felt like a sugar gut. Will try to work in more simple CHO’s on the bike, you a fan of any drink or food setup that works well to mix in? Thanks for the advice.

For long distance races I take most of my calories on the bike as maltodextrin with a little salt, mixed to a gel consistency, plus a couple of commercial gels and occasional sports drink for some electrolytes. Personally I’ve never had gut problems this way, but everyone reacts differently. I think the more different things you have sloshing around in your gut, the more likely you are to have problems.

Infinit. Just add water.

IDK, for me at least every time I feel like that after a bike is just after I went too fast…

To me, if you bike within my limits I can eat most anything and be fine.
