Every once in a while after a swim workout I get pretty bad stomach pain that I can’t figure out. It feels almost like a side stitch, but it’s in the front. The strange thing about it is that the pain doesn’t set in until several hours after I swim (I swim early and it usually happens right around lunchtime), usually when I’m just sitting around. It lasts a couple hours. This only happens on swim days, and it only happens infrequently. Anyway, I was hoping somebody here could shed some light on this mystery. Maybe I swallowed too much pool water?
Yeah, your belt is too tight!
Seriously, I’ve felt this too and its been after swimming and driving to work eating and drinking with the belt notched too tight. It produces a hell of a gut ache. Loosening the belt and walking around a bit gets everything put back in place.
I’ve had a similar problem off and on for years. I have been unable to identify the cause. sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t. But I think, THINK, I have a solution. I’ve become very diligent about keeping a water bottle on deck. I take a big drink after every set and try to finish what’s left of the bottle before or as I leave the gym. I follow this by drinking lots of water afterwards. Also, food can be a problem so I have to make sure I eat slow and wait a bit.
When I have this problem, it comes on pretty quick, within an hour. it sounds like that’s not the case for you. You could try the water anyway. Also, this rarely happens when I swim open water vs. the pool. I’ve never had it happen in a race.
good luck.
I tend to feel pretty bloated if I drink anything during a morning swim…
Seems like it’s exactly the same pain as me -but I have found out what it is…
Air in the stomack. I get the pain if I don’t concentrate on breathing out. I need to active press all air out on every breath.
My mama always told me not to swim within the hour before having lunch or I might cramp up and die whilst eating. Perhaps some folks must wait longer.
I was talking to a friend yesterday (he’s a doctor) who has kidney stones - he described a connection between a hard swim workout and pain in his kidneys - maybe this is something you could look into.
I’m thinking it is air in the stomach. I found another good thread on here about the same thing. . .do a search for “pool belly”. I’ll try exhaling a little better. Thanks everybody.
