Recently our local gym has messed up the ph. levels in its lap pool. All week long we can’t get the chlorine smell off our person. It makes our skin extra dry and itchy. It makes our hair feel like brillo pads. Is there a product on the market to help keep us from shriviling up like prunes post swim work outs. The people at the gym certianly are not chemist so I’m not sure when the issue will be resolved. Not swimming isn’t an option right now. In the middle of a program for New Orleans 70.3 in April.
Soak in AFFF-AR LOL
.
If it is that bad, I would guess the pool is probably not all that safe to be spending a lot of time in. Given running the risk of having it shut down, an anonymous call to the county health office will guarantee someone will come sample it. Be aware though, if it does get shutdown, it will stay that way until the club fixes it. This may or may not be worth it for you…
You need to do this newfangled thing called “bathing.”
.
I put a similar post up last week and I’ve already had success with Aveeno Body Wash and Advanced Formula Mositurizer. Based on multiple recommendations here I ordered Derma Swim Pro, a pre-swim application, that I’m going to try this week. It only took 3 days to be delivered from here:

I’d like to know if DermaSwim works? That sounds like bs.
I think you guys should use gentle but effective soaps, like L’Occitaine. Then use some good moisturizer. But if you swim enough this is going to be a losing battle.
It’s really weird that you are having so many chlorine issues. Most pools now use a newer formulation that is very low in chlorine content.
a hairdresser told me to wet my hair in the shower prior to putting the cap on. The hair will absorb the non chlorinated water and not so much of the chlorinated stuff. you can use a post swim shampoo/conditioner for the brillo pad thing but it’s not a total fix. Rinse off right after your swim in warm water (not hot) and put on a lotion. It won’t remedy the main issue but i might make the symptoms more tolerable. buy polyester swim suits too. people seem to vary in their sensitivity to chlorine levels so you’ve gotta try some different things.
Bathing? I thought you used your time in the pool after your run and bike as a bath to save time to spend with the family. Man no wonder the pool water is jacked up.
Thank you all for the advice and product ideas. I figured Tigerchick and the other mer-triathletes would have been there done that and had the answers to my chlorine issues. This is an indoor pool and it is the newer type chlorine ( the typr which taste a little salty, but isn’t a salt water system). I think the chemist at the gym just screwed up they don’t know how to fix it.
Ha, I know I do but I’m not complaining about the chlorine smell… If it’s just the smell you are concerned about, another good solution is dating former swimmers…
Its not the smell that is just the way of knowing that crap won’t wash off or my body is saturated with the stuff. I have swam in a lot of dirty places and that doesn’t bother me but the prickly heat sensation post swims concerns me.
It’s a badge of honor ![]()
.
If it is a badage of honor I now have earned the medal of valor.Sweet because girls love guys with scare and who smell of the sweetness of chlorine.
I like the fresh clorine smell when you start your next workout. It keeps we smelling disinfected when I am covered in sweat.
As for the hair, I have none. So, I can’t help you there.
Think of all the money you save not having to buy perfume, etc.
