Ok, so for the race tomorrow they gave us actual stickers with my race number on it. One for each side of the bike. They are about 6 inches by 3 inches. I guess this is new to me. Every other race we had the piece of paper that you strap around the frame or maybe a piece of large paper with just a little bit of adhesive to keep the paper from moving.
These things are totally adhesive and very sticky. If I put these on my frame will I ever get them off? I have a Litespeed so no paint. Give me advice please! Maybe I am just stressing with pre-race jitters…
Um - stick the damn thing on! I’ve taped, stuck on race numbers on Cervelo paint (!) so a brushed Ti frame? What are you worried about
Oh, and good luck! I’ve got a road race tomorrow and I just dread the final sprint as the roadies just kill me there. Race for 48 miles only to finish in a pack, 8th place or so, but only 5 secs behind the winner … Ah road racing The only chance I would have is if the race was 100+ miles.
Quit stressing. You won’t have any problems getting the stickers off. I’ve put them on titanium, nude carbon weave, and even a painted Cervelo and no problems. Have a good race.
I usually put some tape on the frame and then the sticker on the tape, very easy to remove. I use it on my helmet to. I don´t know what´s it called but i use the tape that i use to fix the handlebar tape…
I leave the original paper backing on the stickers and then use a border of black electrical tape to put them on the frame. They come right off and any left over residue comes off in a jiffy with goo-gone.
I take those sticky race numbers that are rectangular cut them in two so you have two seperate numbers, and on a slight angle so the number is close to horizontal, I wrap one edge around the seat tube and the other edge around the seat stay. I do that on both sides. The size that they get at the NAS races acts like a little fairing for the rear brake!! I have not had this wind tunnel tested, but MissP has consistantly had top 5 overall women’s bike splits in her last 4 IM races!!
Just a warning you want to be careful cutting those numbers. We had a few people penalized at the regional champs last year for trimming a corner on the number so it wouldn’t rub the rear tire. We thought she was kidding but talked to a few other people said they had the same penalty. It is in the rule book but that was one ref going above the normal call of duty. I personally do some creative folding at times to get them to fit as well.
I have never cut the numbers when doing this. I think the intention with these numbers is that you wrap them around the top tube and the number then hangs down from the top tube with a number on each side. The problem with the women’s frames, is that they are so small that when you get two water bottle in there there is no room for the number. So I just split the number in half and do what I said in the first post. It’s never been a problem at bike check in at a number of IM races.
There are no sponsors on this number, which is the main reason that they say no number modification. Sponsors have paid good money to be on the race numbers. I get that.
OK so I was dreaming when I tore the numbers off and off came some of my Cervelo paint. Worst paint job I’ve ever seen. Yeah I’d be worried if you care about what the paint job will look like afterwards.

First and windy IM AZ had numbers that wrapped around the top tube. After the race I had small scratches (looked like a haze) in the red paint of my 2 month-old Serotta. It took several months and progressive grades of polish to remove the scratches. I would have done better to stick the number to the top tube so it would not flap in the breeze. Good race.
