STI rattling: solutions?

My left Shimano 105 STI shifter is rattling on rough roads, and it’s bugging the crap out of me. Everything else on the bike is quiet and smoooooth so the rattling really stands out.

Damn.

I’ve peeled back the cover and haven’t seen anything that I can really tighten (other than the bolt for the clamp). If I put my hand on the hood (like I’m “palming” it) and squeeze, I can get the rattling to stop.

Anyone know what the problem might be? Fixable by finding the right nut, or is this just the way it goes with 105? Upgrading to Ultegra or DA is not an option at this time.

Much appreciated,

Bryce

Many times it is the dust cover that is rattling (the plastic piece that says “105” on it.) This was a big problem with older STI. I’ve seen some things on ebay that are intended to stop this, I think its a shim or something. Another thing, check to see that your brakes are smooth. If your cable is hanging up it won’t let your lever return all the way and that can cause a rattle. Good luck.
