i love to be one with the one…only if it is a tailwind!!! I mean the wind was strong (about 20-25 mph headwind) for the last 20-22 miles and it there was no tailwind while starting out!!!
it sucks when its against ya on the way back
just pretend yer jogging
then the pace seems ok!
No doubt about it, that wind sucked. But I like to think of wind as a competitive advantage - because so many triathletes are inexperienced cyclists, I always do well on the windy, hilly rides, relatively speaking anyway.
What was your bike time, just outa interest…
Wind is your friend, embrace it!!!
What was your bike time, just outa interest…
gosh!.you don’t wanna know. It was 2:53:45. I averaged around 23 mph for the about the first 35 miles staying in the higher end of zone 2 for me but after that it was just a brutal struggle and just felt the bike split slip out of my hands slowly and mile by mile. Next time around I am drafting!!
It was a pretty tough day out there. We’ve only been to 4 halfs so far, but that was by far the toughest course and conditions. If I were you, I’d be happy.
Well done.
as i understand it…it only got worse during the day. We were the last wave to go off, and it was like riding into a wall for 20 miles
tough bike course, and the run course was no pancake either.

for the record, I am never doing steelhead again. Never!
I think the wind really picked up around 11:00 am or so and the earlier waves got lucky with the wind.
Since we’re doing “for the record”
Sam and I both loved the Steelhead 70.3, both from a race perspective (Sam), and hospitality (Sam and I);
-Entered very late, still got a fab homestay, picked up from the airport, looked after all the week prior to the event,
-Very good communication from race organisor of times / dates / places etc,
-Spent Thursday / Friday travelling race course with Fred who set out the route, the effort these guys go into to ensure the course is hazzard free, exactly the right distance etc, second to non, these guys were meticulous,
-Briefing, everything covered, Juergen (Chief Judge) very approachable, informative, very unlike our experience of USAT official the previous week,
Race Day
-Very smooth all day to be honest, everything was as communicated by RO,
-Volunteers were great, very helpful,
-The course was honest, why wouldn’t you want an honest course, if it’d been perhaps a less honest course would Sam have taken 5 minutes out of Leanda, probably not? Honest courses give honest results, that’s what we love.
-The wind did get up considerably by about 9.45am, Sam only got the last maybe 20 minutes hammered by it, the later starters would have had longer in it, but so would of the people you’d of been racing against from your wave surely?
-Roll Down / Clearwater was well communicated and if you were interested in a spot, you had to know where you stood as far as positions already taken, they continually communicated it for people hoping for a spot,
-Prize Giving-How cool to get a wetsuit from Andy Potts or Leanda? There were some pretty cool spot prizes. The weather turned shit, there’s only so much you can do to plan for that, how nice would it have been if we were all sat on the sand in the sun, real nice. But you can’t plan for cold fronts coming in from the south.
All in all we both really enjoyed it and will definatley be back next year.
Thanks to all the volunteers, organisors, sponsors, and anybody else that helped out at the event.
SB.
I did the race and agree, the RD should be proud of a job well done.
Despite the wind and rain I enjoyed it. the only thing that sucked is they were taking down bike racking and moved my bike so when I got back into the transition area I found my bike but none of my stuff was there and had a small moment of panic until I saw it all like 15 feet away.
The water was great, the wind was tough on the bike coming back, the run course reasonable. The bike course was not congested, since there was the swim to spread out the field. Last year they had to cancel the swim so they had a 2 mi run where they sent out the groups too close together and the riders on the course bunched up, making it hard to pass early on. The entire race was well organized, the support was good. Hard to control the weather. I think the race director and support crew did a great job.
I think you might got me wrong here. I am not steelhead (and any other half distance) again because of the difficulty of the distance for me. The race was organized very well. The swim part was perfect except for the timing mats not being placed at the end of the swim. I don’t understand what you mean by the term honest course??? The course is honest if the same weather conditions exist for everybody through and through the entire race which obviously didn’t happen. Of course, the weather conditions were same if you belonged to the same age group. I think that’s what you mean by the course being honest.
I didn’t get that either, why not put the swim finish mat at the swim finish? Makes no sense to me to put it way up at transition. I thought the transition area was too narrow and long. On my way out of T1, running out with my bike it was tough to navigate all the people sitting down putting on their stuff and or all the gear on the ground… Other than that well, run, well organized for the number of people. That headwind on that last 18 miles of the bike was absolutely brutal.
I agree that the wind definitely was a character building experience at the end of that bike - this was only my second HIM, and frankly I came away thankful that the water was cool, that the waves were not large, the sky was overcast, and the temps were low - - -many ingredients for a fast race except the wind, and frankly the road conditions on the bike(pretty bumpy).
The race was very well staffed - - I appreciated all of the aid stations on the run, with multiple opportunities for Gatorade, water and COLD sponges rocked, and the food afterward was pretty good(no beer though).
Again - only my second HIM, but I figure I would trade the wind for 90 degree temps(what we had at Vineman 2 years ago) any day.
i would trade it other way around. give me 100 with no wind!
just want to bitch about the crazy mf**ing wind in the bike course!! **
Yeah, they should make triathlons easier.
it sucks when its against ya on the way back

i LOVE that! i bet it would work on hills, too, huh?
