Looks like I may need to replace my current road frame, an '03 Marin Treviso (steel with carbon stays). Looking to get another steel steed, though I’ll go carbon-less this time around. Getting a frame that fits is a priority, buit does anyone have any frames they recommend? I’m looking at Marinoni, among others.
What is your price range?
Whatever you do, it needs proper lugs. None of this welded stuff.
Are you going to complain about a Kirk or a Strong?
They weld.
Frame only? Looking up to $1000.
Strong can do a custom frame with a Reynolds fork for about 1300 or maybe a bit more, I think. You can also get a stock size of a Serotta Fierte for about that price. Curtlo frames will be cheaper and custom made. I think about 750 for the frame. Low end Seven custom is also in the 1500 range with a very nice fork.

Also hit up Psycholist for some of his extra Rust Oleum: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=604822;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread
I have a Serotta CIII and love it.
But its definitely above budget. I’d love to get this Gios Compact, there are always Surlys too.
You can get a Merckx leader or Custom Corsa for around $1500, For $1000 look at Torelli.
Yup. They don’t have lugs. My Serotta does. Nuff said
A long time ago I had a Marinoni. Very nice frame, but that was in the days when Columbus SL tubing was high-tech. I don’t think Colnago does any “lower end” steel frames any more, just the Master X-Light.
Where are you? You may be able to find a small local builder, that’s one of the nice things about steel.
I love my Serotta CXII. I got it w/ a carbon stay for $1495. I believe they are $1195 without. Great comfortable ride. The best at custom geometry and fit.
I’m in Toronto…so Marinoni is a “big” local (ish) manufacturer.

Don’t let the people in Montreal (where they’re made) hear you say that. ![]()
Marinoni makes a nice frame. It’s really a shame that Cervelo stopped making the Super Prodigy. Also have a look at the Lemond steel frames.
It’d be a shame for me to have a frame built for me and not plug the builder a little bit. Allan Wanta isn’t too popular, but I’ve ridden a road bike of his for about a year and half and he just created this tri frame for me out of Columbus Zona for about $650, fully custom geometry and all. Most of his frames are in that price range, I would imagine for the extra $350 he could use a higher end tubeset. He was great to work with and I’m just waiting for it to arrive before my final decisions. check out wantaframes.com he actually has an all steel 57cm bike for sale right now.
53 top tube
78 degree STA
10cm integrated head tube
72 degree HTA
Gerard said here awhile back that he has some Prodigy frames left. Endurosport had a new old stock one a couple of months ago.

Rock lobster are around a grand semi custom, I have an alum areo frame from him, he is a quality builder. Curtlo is another around a grand steel builder.
