Stationary Pool Cords

Hi All-

Well I'm looking to complete the trio of hamster devices (trainer/treadmill/...and now swim cords) I've read the post about the riptide system and it seems good...I used to use the old one that went around your waist..but I see one on trizone for 20 bucks...vs the 80 for the riptide...can anyone offer waistt vs feet attachment advice...or know if the ripTide is worth the extra 60 bucks...thanks

Sorry I guess I need to break down the cost more…ripTide is 80$ plus 40$ for another pair of shoes…the TriZone cords (Which also attaches to your feet, ankles really) is 20$

SO…RipTide…$120.00

OR…TriZone…$20.00

Not sure if Hamsters CAN swim…

Bump

Anybody?? nobody uses stationary cords?

What’s wring with just using a regular waist cord? I used one for a few months and it made me a much better swimmer. I come from a swimming backround and it made me really change my stroke. I am much more balanced than I was. I was no shabby swimmer beforehand. 18:30 1.5k. havent reced sence.

I would just go for what is cost effective. I got a 4’ cord at a LSS for 25 bucks and it works great.

Things to make sure you do durring stationary swimming.

Always alternate breath

Always kick strong

Pay attention to form, espically elbows and head. at times try to make the tension on the cord even, no jerking with each stroke. It helps with feel. (not all the time though)

Your turnover will suffer so get in a pool once a week and so some quick 25’s.

I just watched that REALLY corny video on http://www.swimriptide.com/

That thing looks OK. I dont know about breaststroke but what the hell, try it out. I have found that swimming fly in a small pool without lane lines is a real pain. Too many waves.

I personally wouldn’t spend the $ on the riptide but it looks like a good product.

You’re in Temecula Hey? Are there any group rides here? I just moved to the area. Maybe we have talked in my store. Maybe we can start something. Who are you R-E-A-L-L-Y? My fat ass need to get into shape. Hooking up with others always helps get me out the door.

I need a nap.

I’m in the process of building my own. Swim Cords sell for around $35USD, depending on which ends you want (handles/paddles/ankle straps). I plan on mostly using the ankle straps, but also use the cords for run drills, so having handles at the other ends would be handy as well. They do have an “everything” set that includes the cords, handles, paddles, and ankle straps for ~$65USD, but I’m in Canada and don’t want the conversion/shipping/duty hassle, plus I believe in overbuilding everything - so I’m making my own modular system.

2x 4-5’ Surgical tubing - cheap @ < $2CAD/ft pretty much anywhere, and likely less at medical supply stores.
4x rock climbing anchor rings ~$3ea
4x rock climbing karabiners ~$5ea
2x ankle straps (still looking for a good deal here)
2x handles (likely gonna improv something with PVC tubing)
2x hand paddles (cheap swim ones are ~$7/pr)

I’ll tie the climbing anchors to the ends of the tubing, and use the karabiners to connect to whatever ends I want. Perfectly modular system, and the tubing (which is the cheapest part) is also the weakest link - so it’s super easy and affordable to fix if need be. Also very easy to clip to an anchor/itself at the pool.

This may be more of a pain in the ass than just buying some cords, and not THAT much of a savings - but they’ll be hella tough, and the homegrown factor also appeals to me.

The other thing is that I really hate it when those cheapo “spring clamp ends” pull free, so this will NOT happen with my cords. I guarantee I’ll be the only one with swim cord conectors rated to 24N!

PS - I agree that the Riptide video is the cheesiest thing ever. Makes Florida timeshare videos and Gr 7 biology film reels look well produced.

Hey LaWoof

I’m “IronMny’s” wife - we moved to Temecula just about a year ago, now. I checked out your store online when you posted a while ago about opening up there - haven’t made it into the actual store yet. How are things going? There’s a good ride that leaves out of I.E. Bikes (just off the 215 on los alamos, next to blockbuster) on Saturday mornings at 7 - Jonathan’s usually on that one.

What area of T-mec are you in?

Hey LaWoof- I just sent you a ‘private’ message telling you abou thte rides in temecula…maybe we can meet up…thanks everyone for the info on hamster swimming
.

I’ven seen a machine for swimming on land…on Active.com…I think. Everytime I see the advertisement video with the guy using it I laugh…maybe I shouldn’t…but I have enough trouble doing the laps in the 25m pool at the gym and feel like hamster in there…let alone hitting a machine…I hate treadmills too…LOL
