Starting the comeback

Out of the pool and no running for over a month, two weeks of no trainer action. I got the green flag to get in the pool this week. I suspect the bike will come around in short order, although HR was up 8-10/min on the hr trainer ride yesterday. The swim today was, well, lets say the one-legged gal gave me all I could handle. The run is probably toast and it will be a slow rebuild. No promises of when I can restart, “maybe next week.” The last 4 yrs I’ve got 8-10 hrs/week year round with the occassional week off every quarter so there is some base in there. Extrapolating from one source it looked liked 6-8 weeks before I can expect to be back to square one. First race is Mussleman in July. Great Buckeye in Aug is the “A” race. Time goals are suspended for Mussleman for the time being. Questions

  1. What’s it take to get back after a month off?

  2. Normal goals would be for steady state rides in the 4-5 hr range before hill and interval focus. I figure to stay with that but I have doubts. Thoughts?

  3. Run will be tough. Too many old injuries from contact sports for a fast ramp-up. It is what it is, body will dictate on a day-to-day basis the return.

Thanks

One month off, that should be manageable. I took 3 months off and it has taking me about 8 weeks to get back in shape. One month should take only 3-6 weeks, just don’t make your comeback too fast.

Slow and Steady,
