Stand alone FM radio headset?

There usually a good one at walmart to be had. Not bone conducting.

Part of the issue is FM radio is dying a slow and inevitable death. Why would anyone bet on that technology? Listening trends are to streaming services and even the FM radio stalwart… the vehicle… has moved in that direction with infotainment systems that can handle streaming audio services (or SiriusXM) many different ways with USB connections, WiFi connections, 5G/LTE connections, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

My kid is almost 18 years old. I’m not sure he’s ever heard FM radio and even knows what it is. To him “radio” is SiriusXM, Spotify, or Apple Music.

I will now get off your lawn.

Getting old is a bitch. Radio was so simple. And free. But I can’t loose hope… they said the same for vinyl records and antenna TV. A year ago there were 29 antenna TV stations here… I recently ran a new scan, and got 64 channels.

I think your best bet is iHeart Radio from your phone to your bluetooth headphones or something like Zygo that can transmit live audio from your phone to the Zygo swim conduction headphones. A stand-alone unit needs an antenna, which is why wired headphones are still needed for FM or AM radio. But most radio stations now stream online, hence the phone plus bluetooth headphones option.

If you don’t want to carry your phone with you, you could get a Garmin watch with the music option, download music or podcasts from iHeart Radio subscription (about $12/month) and listen while you run.

That’s part of the situation… I don’t even have a smart phone. Never have, and don’t know if I ever will. Having something to transmit music with, isn’t enough of a reason to for me to get one. The Tayogo brand radio I’ve been using (basically a dinosaur version of Aftershockz) had the antenna inside the part that wrapped around the back of your head, and it worked great, so I would just assume that the modern brands would do the same. The watch idea has crossed my mind, but in that case, I would just get the downloadable Aftershockz swim headset… which is the direction I might go. I had approx 800 songs on my last mp3 swim headset, and it’s surprising how fast that gets old. MUCH prefer the radio.

I was like you but it’s really convenient to have one. It will make your life easier and connect with your family better. I didn’t like social media either but had no choice but joining because most group ride, training camp, swim clinic…everything is there. A couple of times, I showed up in group rides without knowing it was cancelled because they posted the notice on Facebook group. Checking bulb size for your car, making reservations for dinner, booking kennel, online dating, shopping, weather app, watching Netflix on the airplane, paying with your phone at a grocery store, alarm, reserving your spot at spin classes…everything’s online and smartphone now. Anyway, it’s your life and up to you, but I’m just sharing my experience. It’s definitely good to have one.

I’m connected with my computer and iPad. I train alone, and always have. My family has our own Facebook page. In fact I’m on my iPad right now, while putting in indoor bike miles. But I leave them behind when I go out in the world. Its a really weird world out there. It’s almost like being in a futuristic movie. Everyone is connected to their phone, and I’m almost invisible. Like being on a planet full of zombies. I often wonder if folks these day realize how they look, to us old geezers, who remember what the world used to be like. The gym is the craziest. Very little lifting, and all the equipment being used to sit on and check phones. I have no interest in being part of all that. BTW, I do have a non smart modern flip phone, so I can connect in emergencies, or when needed. I’ve probably used it 3 or 4 times in the last year.

I think, then, your best bet is an older iPod that has FM/AM radio and some form of wired earbuds or headphones. I did find online several years ago a dongle that connected to the iPod and functioned as an antenna and bluetooth transmitter to wireless earphones. It worked fine, however, eventually, I switched over to Garmin Music watch for some runs with set playlists or bluetooth headphones plus iPhone for streaming radio and/or music.

I’ve had them in the past, and have gone through a collection of wired ear bud type players, and usually get about 2-3 weeks out of the wires, in the pool. For context, this is what I’ve had recently, and it’s PERFECT for what I do, with the FM radio. The only problem, is they are cheaply made, older design, and bulky… and don’t last. I’ve gone through 3 of them. My hope was that a higher quality company would make the same thing… but no one else has the FM radio… which is what I use almost exclusively. If AfterShokz made a FM radio version, with nothing else, I couldn’t give them my money fast enough.

Found THIS ONE on Amazon. No idea if it’s good or not but it has pretty good reviews, and for the price you can buy a few of them in case it craps out.

Haha the review pictures are for a completely different product. Typical Amazon scam by sellers to transition positive reviews to another product by editing it instead of making a new listing. Not to mention that looks like a junk product. Amazon isn’t hesitating to turn itself into Alibaba/Wish. A mass retailer of landfill…
