I had been eyeing up power meters for quite some time. Many of my friends were seeing positive results from training with power. I could not help but feel I was missing out on that training edge. After looking through Ray’s review http://www.dcrainmaker.com/tag/stages-cycling - the Stages power meter seemed to be a great option. My goals were to be able to evaluate power on my TT and road bike…and maybe even my rain bike, in both training and race situations. I did not want to be tied to using either a race wheel or training wheel for power. The Stages meter was reasonably priced compared to options which also fit my criteria above.
I purchased the Stages Ultegra power meter a month ago, and received it 2 weeks after my order. Communication from the company was excellent for shipping questions.
Over the past two weeks I have been able to get some valuable information for training and have easily dealt with a minor issue. I had been using Virtualpower with Trainerroad. I was using a Tacx Bluetwist mag trainer 4 (to match trainer tension) and getting a FTP number of 215w from the 20 min test with this setup. This number seemed a bit low (2.72 FTP/kg) compared to my expected result. I was eager to see how the results compared with the Stages meter using “non”-virtual power. My FTP test using the Stages meter came back at 254w (3.21 FTP/kg.) I did have a few issues during this test and an Olympic distance triathlon a few days later. The power meter signal was cutting out every few minutes. This happened with numerous head units (an ANT+ stick, a Magellan Switchup and O-Synce Navi2coach.) Communication once again was great from Stages. Evan, customer relations at Stages, quickly helped me figure out that I needed to update the software. The update took 3-4 mins syncing from the Stages App on my iphone to the Stages meter. Since the update I have not had any issues with reading power.
Overall, I’m happy with the Stages power meter. I’m looking forward to analyzing the information and using it for building workouts and pacing for races. Maybe I can finally fix my problem of “too fast, to early!”
Thanks for the report. I just ordered mine a week ago and was wondering how long of a wait to expect. Sounds like in your case they shipped about a week after you ordered. I got the Ultegra crank arm as well and I’m going to use it indoor with TrainerRoad and outside with a 310xt head unit.
I am really interested in this product and considering selling my quarq and buying two stages meters, one for each bike. switching cranks is getting old and I am too cheap to buy another quarq.

i don’t think you can do that… they come pre mounted.

You can buy two cranks…basically same price as one quark.

are you sure? the drivetrain crank (at least on duraace) isn’t the same as the non drive train. they only put the meter on the non drivetrain crank…
I think you’re on the wrong page here. I understood the poster to say they would buy two stages systems and permanently mount them on two different bikes. If you are starting from new, it would be 1600 for 2 stages units or ~1500 for one quark that you would need to swap.

He’s saying two units for two different bikes will be about the same as one Quarq.
