Stadler goes 2:32:12

Looks like he had a great race (Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon). Congrats to him.

I’m very impressed. I think that shows he probably could run between 2:45/2:50 in an IM if he wasn’t German and born with the “I must crush the bike” gene.

who cares if he can run sub 2:50 in an IM, why give up ten minutes on the bike to save 5 min. on the run. It would not make sense to take that risk.

what if giving up 5 mins on the bike left him able to run 10 mins quicker?

That is faster than I thought he would go. I bet he would have been sub 2:30 with a few extra weeks of marathon-specific preparation. It looks like he had a really rough patch at 30K to the finish. Great performane though…too bad he was sick in Hawaii.

Hats off to Stadler. That is an impressive run from a relatively big man who was training to crush the Hawaii course! As for his Kona tactics…well, I think his Kona tactics are just fine…how many guys have 2 wins in the past 4 years?

Reality check: A 2:32 marathon is just NOT very fast for a Kona champ.

Low 2:20’s is more what I would expect from this sport after almost 30 years of development. The running among the pros has hit a plateau for more than a decade, and someone has to figure out that an awesome run is what is needed to dominate that race – like winning it 6x in 7 years (see “Mark Allen”).

Any idea on what is the best PR for a Kona champ> I suspect that 2:32 isn’t far off.

Styrrell

I honestly thought he would go sub 2:30. I wonder what the weather was like.

He was fading at the end too, look at the splits. But training to run sub 2:30 and training to run sub 3 off the bike are different things.

a relatively big man? doesn’t he weigh about 155 lbs? i guess that makes me a freaking clydesdale. and you would be really impressed with my 2:37, 8 weeks after actually racing an ironman.

sorry guys, but stadler has the skills to run a lot faster than 2:32.

Well said! I don’t know why people get so excited about Stadler. This guy is loaded with natural ability but has no heart and seemingly refuses to work to his potential. I do not find anything about his racing “impressive” and if he wasn’t so naturally talented he would be nowhere in this sport because he has no heart. I respect the 80 year old that finishes an IM in 16:59:59 a lot more than I do a spoiled clown like Stadler.

Thats just harsh…

Who on earth are you to judge and say he has no heart? You don’t even know him. I’m not neccesarily a big stadler fan, but as I recall his finish line interview in 2004 was very emotional…and his words were heart spoken. Further, the agony and emotion he displayed in 2005 when he had two flats and dnf’d suggested to me that he had a ton of heart…he was crying…was very upset.

Back to the topic at hand, I wasn’t under the impression that he was a big guy. Does anyone know his height/weight?

A spoiled clown???

Wow where do get off calling out someone like that, there has been few IM athletes who have made easy transitions to running the stand alone marathon, mainly due to the different training involved. If you understood this you’d realize stadlers time is basically par for the course, of course he could go faster, but it would mean switching sports and not biking or swimming. There are not many, perhaps none, male IM winners who have sub 2:20 marathon times, and Stadler has never been a run focused athlete…

Maybe you should stop calling out 2X IMHawaii winners, it only makes YOU look like a spoiled clown

You don’t think his bike split from Kona 06 was impressive? I don’t mind if you don’t like the guy, but that is just plain ridiculous.

One of the fastest runners in the IM races, Gerrit Schellens have a PB of 2:24 in a stand alone marathon. So that 2:32 from Normann is fast.

Are there any online programs to reduce and eventually eliminate my heart?

I would like to be without a heart.

I have to agree with you. He has great talent and ability but crumbles whenever things aren’t going his way. Didn’t anyone read his comments after IM Germany this year? He said that despite the “mysterious” cramp that he got in the swim, he wasn’t happy with the people that were riding in the lead pack on the bike. Then he dropped out. After the two flats in Hawaii in 2005 he dropped out. This year on the bike he can’t seem to drop the group like he normally does…and drops out.

I like someone who races to win, but if things aren’t going your way it doesn’t mean that you should drop out.

What a great run for a three sport athlete.
Congratulations!!!
