Hi, looking for input on carbon running shoes that have ankle stability. Have tried Endorphin 2 & Brooks Hyperions in the past only for my ankles to collapse in. Thank you!
I have tried adidas pro 2/3, puma fast r?, alpha fly, vaporfly, meta speeds, hoka cielo and one to two others i have foegotten about. But the by far most stable is/was saucony elite 1, this shoe is pure magic for my overpronation feet. No need for my usual orthodics and they dont leave me sore either.
One i have not tried but many say is very stable is the rocket x2, impossible to get in EU in most sizes, it also has only 5 mm drop if i remember.
Yeah, the OG Endorphin Pro was my jam. If only they could run that one back. Alas, Saucony feels lost at the moment.
But yes, to the OP, it’s the Rocket X2. It gives you the classic bucketed ride of a HOKA with the foam / carbon plate of a super shoe.
The rumor is that the current AlphaFly 3 is also far more stable than it used to be, although I have not tested it.
Any chance of a review of supershoes that offer some stability/security for those of us who tend to twist our ankles when falling outward over the edge.
I felt that all the original Hokas did a good job solving that problem because of their background from ultra running involving trails (last thing you want is to run down a trail in runway model high heels !!!)
Working on it!
How do you feel that Saucony is lost? Reviews for the Pro 4 and Elite, as well as speed 3 and 4 have been pretty spectacular. The complaint about the OG Pro was…it wasn’t competitive with either foam or speed really.
Just curious - I haven’t really heard many people pining for that shoe from a competitive standpoint.
Most of those reviews come from people who are looking at competing solely against the VaporFly and AlphaFly of the world, which misses a fairly wide swath of the running market.
And the entirety of the product line is a mess. They are caught between trying to be a Nike-esque “we sell everything” and a true specialty run brand champion, with shoes that match. The Triumph, the Ride, the Guide – the bread and butter shoes at specialty run retail – haven’t hit target.
The AF3 is an insane shoe, extremely fast. While more stable than the OG, it is certainly not a stability shoe.
For some, maybe. Even some Nike sponsored athletes are/were still using prior versions or sticking to the VF line. Most people still say the AF1 was faster.
And what do you mean be extremely fast anyway? The differences are all within 1%. In my lab test, the difference between slowest and fastest was 4%. That difference I could feel. The order of the shoes that were within 2%, I wou ldnt be able to tell you the order by feel. RPE, or HR. Adidas tested faster for me than the AF1, btw. It wasn’t the magic bullet many people make it out to be.
While technically “illegal” because of its stack height and one could argue, with good reason, it’s not a SPEED carbon super shoe, the Skyward X has a pretty stable base and a lot of bounce. I’m still in the midst of a long recovery process from an achillies surgery and this has become my go-to shoe. It’s definitely faster than most of the other shoes in my rotation (Skyflow, Rebel, Novablast…all with orthotics).
For me the AF3 are faster than the AF1, which is faster than any of the VF’s. Its very subjective.
Its not subjective when you can meaure VO2 on a spiroergometer. Do you mean its individual?
What was the efficiency difference in your case?
These three shies will not be different enough to find a difference by feel, RPE, or HR.
Might be for the US or your personal opinion but Saucony has never been so good as it is now for the last 4 years here in our country in Europe.
They just are booming

The AF3’s certainly feel fast and more stable than previous versions but I vote for the New Balance SC Elite v4 as a super shoe that feels very stable.
Overall sales are way down, as in mid-20s percentage points down YoY, after a pretty sizable decline in 2023 to boot. Lots of strong headwinds.
Salomon S/Lab Phantasm CF
I absolutely loved the SC V2, such a user friendly “super” shoe. The V3 had a great sole, but the boot upper was horrible. V4 I didn’t even try after getting the Rebel v4 and experiencing the awesomeness of the short tongue. What a stupid design mistake, don’t know what they were thinking. Otherwise, I really like the Rebel, hands down the most stable shoe I ever ran in, insanely wide (but still very light).
Deffinately agree with you here.
The NB SuperComp Elite is a great shoe. I have used the v2 and v3. I really liked the v2 and had no issues. The v3 is a great shoe but the lacing on that shoe was a disaster. I still do some runs in this shoe. I just got the v4 and it is an overall great shoe. It is more inline with the v2 than the v3. Agree that the upper is wider for this version, but I have no issues with the tongue. The v4 and the Rebel look to have the same tongue and upper design.
Shout out for the SuperComp Pacer v2. Another fast, stable shoe. Not as much plush though.
Completely true, this is thé most stable shoe with carbon that I got on my feet. And I and my business partner due to the fact we are in this business, have them almost all.
AF3 is really not bad in stability but the NB is much more stable while still giving you this nice bounce.
