Hi all. Are there any STers planning on doing the St. Marys (near Stratford Ontario) 5km open water swim on September 9th? I’m thinking of doing it, but I need a few tips on how to keep warm without the help of a wetsuit. The water temperature is going to be in the low 20s (C). For me, this is cold.
That’s my home town!
I’m thinking of doing it, as for staying warm…swim faster! Seriously though I was a lifeguard at the Quarry as a highschool student, the water temp is nothing to worry about.
Hopefully see you there!
Ian
Did similar a few weeks ago (in Alberta no less), I wore a sleeveless speedskin with long legs to keep a bit warmer. didn’t notice the cold too much during the race - but almost froze my can off waiting for the start. Once I got moving things were fine - but towards the end of the race, the cold started to get to me (and to my brain). I think if you get out and are able to train open water without a wetsuit as much as you can, you’ll be ready for the shock of the cold and the lack of buoyancy.
There’s no need to worry about the water temperature, it’s quite comfortable. My wife and I swim up there quite frequently.
My boss (Bryan Finlay) is actually the organizer of the swim. I’ve thought about racing it for fun sometime.
I’m going to give it a shot! By the way… what’s a speedsuit?
