St. Anthony's Triathlon - St. Petersburg, FL

Anyone doing St. Anthony’s at the end of April? Great race, course and experience…

I wish! My two favorite races are st Anthony’s and escape to Miami… The run through the neighborhood at St. A’s is a freaking blast. I’ve never had such a great time suffering.

Good luck to all those planning on this one — it won’t disappoint. Plus, the area around Vinoy is beautiful.

Yup, will be there. Racing AG Open wave in the Oly.

That’s one thing I regretted – racing my AG and not open. Standing around for an hour and a half blows.

I’ll be there
.

I’ll be there in the AG open wave.

With the addition of the sprint, has it cleared the course up any? I remember when I raced it in 2012 (raced my AG), the course was really crowded. I always felt they let too many freaking people on course.

Also… hoping for a non-shortened swim.

Is STA usually wetsuit legal?

Yep. Ill be there. Fourth year in a row.

Last year was NOT wetsuit legal… and swim conditions can be dicey. I’m coming off a back injury so I’m not expecting to be fast… well, fast for me.

Love St. Anthony’s though… on paper it looks easy, but I have yet to put together a solid race there. Dicey swim, can be windy, lots of bike traffic (although the sprint has thinned out the Oly course a little), and humidity, not to mention heat depending on when you start.

And I F**KING hate the speed bumps in the neighborhood… not to mention there are now more on the course. >:

It’s always borderline. Last year was not wetsuit legal but 2013 was. Not sure what happened in 2014.

This a big race for beginners so they almost always try to make it wetsuit legal. I remember swimming the day before the race in 2013 in my speedo. That water was really warm and I thought no way in hell will it be wetsuit legal. Sure enough, it was wetsuit legal the next day and the swim was shortened due to winds/chop.

Love St. Anthony’s, but I’m not doing it this year (singularly focused on running Boston this winter). Every Triathlete should do St. Anthony’s at least once. And yes, once you get down to the golf course on the bike, be alert for the speed bumps. I saw a guy ahead of me last year fly over his handlebars.

Good to know. It snowed this week in Pittsburgh so it’ll be an interesting race with the heat if things don’t start warming up for us! Disc/808 front a risky choice on this course?

I would run that setup, but be warned that there can be some nasty crosswinds that snake between the buildings downtown.

I plan to run that setup no matter what the conditions are.

Go for it. I run a 60front/90 rear with disc cover.

But cloy is right about the crosswinds between the buildings. Last year huge gust nearly pushed me into a curb going through an intersection. It was nasty and I didn’t miss the curb by much. I rode a little further left after that.

I’ll also caution about the gusts between the buildings. I ran 60/disc last year. This year I’m going to run 40/90. 60/disc doesn’t have much of a benefit at zero yaw. St Anthony’s is either zero yaw (sheltered bike course) or 20 yaw (big gusts between buildings downtown). You spend basically no time in between.

Same, got a few friends making the trip over as well!

I’ll be there. Looking to go really fast. Do you think the course sets up for a under an hour bike? I know there’s a lot of turns and 180s on the course but it’s FLAT!

BTW, I used to live right off the run course so I know those areas really well. I’m excited to see what I can do after the training I’ve put in this year.

The second half of the bike course is fast.

Yes there are AG’s that can ride under an hour on this course.

You made me curious… so I went and looked at last years results and only 9 age group (including Open) males were sub 1:00! I thought it would be higher than that… kudos if you can go sub 1-hour.
