SRM Powercontrol Battery Replacement in Canada

Guys,

Anyone have their battery for their SRM powercontrol replaced in Canada. I left my Powercontrol lying around since last July and have not used it and plugged it in to change on Saturday for a Sunday AM outdoor ride and it is was totally dead. Bummer, because the battery life on it was still in the 28 hour range last summer. Seems like I killed it by leaving it lying around, but for the last 8 months, riding with power was fairly low on my priority list, but now it is a bit higher.

I don’t really want to deal with Fedex-ing it across the border for repair etc…or better yet, I assume this is a standard battery than you can just buy off the shelf somewhere and pop into the unit. I’m assuming this is was SRM does anyway (it’s not like they are going to spend R&D on developing their own custom battery)…anyone know?

Dev,

Not sure about supply of PC V/VI batteries in Canada, but they are NOT standard batteries. See attached photo.

I purchased my replacement battery from a guy in Australia, then shipped them to Hawaii (regular mail), then replaced the battery myself. I have lots of photos and step-by-step instructions is you want them.

Hi Mark,

Is there some soldering involved in the replacement process? (if so, I can take it over to the lab here at work at lunch time and get one of the guys with better skills to help me) Also is the replacement batter 14hours vs 32 hours on the original?

Dev

Hi Dev,

Some very basic soldering is required.

Not sure of the 14 hr vs 32 hr, but I know the guy in Oz made up a bunch to conform to the original SRM PC V and VI specs. The price was US$10 each battery, plus US$10 flat rate for air mail. When I get home I will dig up the info and get it to you.

I have full photos with description of step-by-step procedure to replace PC and PM batteries…and calibration too. Give me your email and I will get this stuff to you.

Regards,

Mark

Cool stuff. PM on the way. Good to be self sufficient and avoid having to be pay Fedex and brokerage charges, plus waiting for units stuck at the border.

On the replacement batteries, if I order from the fellow in Australia, if I order extras and leave they lying around do they have a “shelf life”?

There use to be a company in Alberta, I had mine replaced there about 5 or 6 years ago

Dev - resurrecting an old thread. I recently have come down with 2 dead PCV units due to battery failure. Any suggestions on replacement approach? I can email with you if best…

I replaced my PCV battery recently. If you’re (or someone you know) comfortable with soldering, it’s a very simple 15min job.
There is a seller in the UK that sells the 3NH-100H Replacement Battery for the PCV. It’s 110mAh that matches the OEM one.

Another option is to use three serial-connected 1/4AAA batteries. They are 80mAh rechargeable NiMH 1.2V each. I taped them up and soldered them with small pieces of wires. Took me 30min. These are widely available and costs $3 each. The reduced capacity isn’t a concern to me, they last 12hrs and I recharge after each ride.

I replaced one this weekend. You can get 3.6V 80 mAh NiMh batteries on amazon for $5-10 shipped. Just unscrew the back panel, unsolder the old one, and solder in the replacement.

Just curious, does anyone know about water resistance after you replace batteries? Do you need to seal up the PC after changing out the battery? I’m concerned about riding in the rain…
