SRM pairing issue

I’ve been using SRM with my Garmin 705 for some time. Never any issues pairing. I bought a new bike, new Garmin 500, and had the SRM moved to the new bike. Now I can’t get the SRM to pair with either the 500 (mounted) or the 705 (which I’m just holding near the bike).

  • I’ve turned the arms backwards to try to zero
  • I’ve gone through both computers to scan for the powermeter (Ant+).

What happens is when I go to Ant+ sport / accessories / restart scan both computers just go back to the ant+sport menu.

I haven’t tried updating the firmware yet or anything but figured the 705 should at least work given that I’ve been using it regularly on my old bike.

Any thoughts?

AAAAhhhhhhh, don’t update the Garmin 500 firmware…ever. Those of us who did are dying with issues.

When is the last time the battery was replaced on the SRM?

I’ve never replaced the battery.

This one I got used over a year ago. So, I have no idea if the battery was ever replaced. I assume not.

It just seems to me that if it originally worked with the Garmin 705 before and now it doesn’t, that maybe the battery is done for.

SRM’s are awesome, but the big draw back is you have to send it back to SRM to swap out the battery.

This is why I love my Quarq CinQo, I can change the batteries out whenever by myself.

Before you send the powermeter back for a battery change, I’d make sure that the BB magnet is close enough to the reed switch. Play around with moving it closer and farther away, maybe even use a larger magnet. In my experience when the battery needs to be replaced it is a gradual process of ‘not working’ right, while it sounds like yours went from working one day to not working the next.

GDNenn - I hadn’t realized that the magnet was used to turn the powermeter on until you said this (I’m not that bright). I appreciate it.

I actually tried moving it closer this morning but it looks like it is as close as the magnet bracket will allow me. So, I’ll try manually putting the magnet up closer and if it works then I’ll find a way to get a longer bracket. Thanks.

Not sure if this is relevant as apparently the unit worked before on the other bike but with the new wireless PM’s which use the dual cadence switch the cranks must be rotated forward to wake up the system. Turning them backwards doesn’t work anymore which is a PITA when calibrating at home.
