SRAM S80s or Reynolds Assualt

So, here it comes down to these 2 wheel sets. They’ll mostly be used for triathlons, time trials, and road races; in that order. I clearly prefer clincher, and would also prefer the aluminum surface of the s80’s as opposed to carbon on the Assault. But, the Assualts have a better hub, but are also shallower(less aero?) and don’t have the ‘famously fast’ toroidal design of the s80s. Reynolds Strike’s are an option too, they’re deeper than Assaults but not quite as deep as s80’s… just less spokes than Assaults. I can’t decide! Pictures for happiness

Assaults are a great rim and a great all arounder. The hubs are so-so. I have a set with around 9k miles on them. I will eventually rebuild with another set of hubs. The rear freehub creaks, and there are others with the same problem. The pawls dont always engage fully and it creaks. It isnt a huge deal, just annoying. I would go for the strikes if your priority is tris - not that much heavier and much deeper.

Never ridden the Sram’s, so no direct comparison. I dont know why the hubs of Sram would be considered lesser. The rim will be heavier but probably more aero. Compared to the strikes, probably not that much to notice.

Have a set of 404’s and just bought an S80 front. I can let you know how the quality of the front wheels compare in a few days if you like. My brother has S60’s and seems to love them. They seem like a very good pricepoint to performance ratio.

Yeah man definitely!

I have experience with both those wheel sets, as well as the strikes. I love them all. Honestly I would put it down to cost.

Well I can get them both for about a grand… So there lies another problem: they’re priced the same

Hey idle,

Looks like my front S80 should arrive Thurs. or so. Will shoot you some thoughts after a ride.

SRAM if you want the faster set.
