I’m looking for tire recommendations for SRAM S60 wheels. I currently run an R4 Aero (22mm) front and vanilla Grand Prix (23mm) rear with a cover on the rear wheel. I ride a 2011 Speed Concept 7.
From what I can tell the wheels are about 18mm at the brake track and 22mm at the widest point. There’s been a lot of discussion about fast tires recently, but unfortunately an upgrade to newer, wider wheels isn’t in the foreseeable future so I’m looking to balance rolling resistance and aero as best I can. Some of the fast tires come in ~21mm widths, but I’m not sure I want to go that narrow in general.
Aerowise the people in the know say 21mm is the best for a pre-FC Zipp 404 Clincher which is essentially the same shape as an s60. Couple that with any independent tyre testing data (ie. Tom A) on RR and you have your decision.
What is your issue with a narrower tyre? Surely going from 22mm to 21mm is not something to be concerned about.
My concern was more about whether giving up that much rolling resistance was worth the aero. I’ve looked at some of the studies that have come out from Tom A, Flo, etc. I’m not that concerned about pinch flats or handling with narrow tires. The GP TT comes in a 20mm that sounds viable for a front.
Attack/Force has been what I’ve been checking out today. The rims say 18-23mm tires, but it sounds like the extra 1mm of the Force doesn’t make or break anything. I’d have to check frame and storage box clearance on the rear, but that pair seems like the best option at the moment. Do you know about what pressure you run them at? Specifically the rear?
