What are the thoughts on this? Looking to get either:
SRAM PG-1070
or
Shimano Ultegra 6700
I will be using it for Placid this year and was thinking setting it up with a bailout gear “just in case” so probably an 11-28 (53/39 up front). I’ve heard the SRAM cassettes were noisier but didn’t going from the OG design to the PG design fix this? Cost is about the same on both and they both seem to be reliable. Thoughts.
i went to sram a few years ago and couldn’t be happier. dumped my dura ace gruppos and have had red, rival and now apex. drive train noise? i can’t hear the difference and i’m just not that picky about it even if i heard it. to that end i can’t hear such things at speed. i now run a pg-1050 and it runs just as well as the red did. if you stick with shimano i would run a 105 cassette…will last forever.
I actually have a mix of Shimano and SRAM cassettes currently but nothing in the gearing I am looking for. The only SRAM ones I have are the OG-1070 and they do seem noisier but as long as it’s not effecting performance I could care less if it sounded like a freight train. My whole group now is Red but cannot see myself dropping $200 on a Red cassette anytime soon.
I have both. Shimano is definitely quieter and IMO shifts a little bit better. I love SRAM deraileurs but Shimano has the chain/cassette thing figured out. That being said, I race on a PG-1070 because SRAM offers the 11-26 cassette, which is my favored setup for road racing around here (Washington State). Haven’t tried the 11-28, but I do have a 12-27… I generally miss the 11t more than the 27t. In the end casettes don’t really change how fast you go, just how much you suffer
