I’ve been looking at the Rival/Force groups, and I see the doubletap system that they use with their brifters. How does that work if you use bar end shifters instead?

It doesn’t. They are just bar end shifters that work with a SRAM rear derailleur. They work great though.
So is it still an index type shifting for the rear, or friction like the front?

Index- like a tighter version of shimano- front der is friction. You need a SRAM Rear Der. to work with them. Front der. can be anything.
