SRAM buys Quarq!

While I’m happy for the Quarq proprietors, as an owner of a Quarq Rotor system I’m really not so sure this is a good thing. One of the things that set Quarq apart was their customer service, and that is now going to be in question under the SRAM management.

IMHO, limiting the options to only SRAM cranks is also as mistake. I have a feeling that SRM and Power2Max will also be pretty happy about that part of this deal.

I was thinking the same thing. I have an FSA SL-K version with appropriate bottom brackets on all my bikes. Hopefully it won’t be an issue…

Just because they got bought by SRAM doesn’t mean they should only offer a SRAM version. That would almost be like only offering Zipp wheels with a special hub that will only take a SRAM cassette… Sure they can do it, but it might actually decrease overall profits.

They ares till going to be based out of Spearfish SD. I really doubt they are going to change their customer service model since they know how well it works. I wouldn’t be worried if I had a non-SRAM Quarq.

Honestly I have the same feelings as you do, I’m happy for them but concerned that some of the things that made them to be a great ccompany are going to get lost in the transition. I love quarq so much I just sent them 2 lbs of kona coffee from coffees of Hawaii. That says something, but with that said Denham from zipp was there before they were bought and he still kicks ass and takes care of all my needs. So time will tell…

When SRAM purchased Zipp I recall many saying it would simply become a name for rebadged generic products, that certainly hasnt become the case. SRAM has proven they are smart enough to leave well enough alone with their acquisitions. I think this is great for both companies, and now Mieke doesnt have to go back to counting cows in SD!

Happy for everyone involved. Not a big surprise. I wagered it’d be either Specialized or SRAM that would buy them, and I figured in the next 12mos or so (and this was around Christmas). Great companies on both sides. “Win-win!”

Not a fan… I better sell my Rotor Quarq before it’s worth $5.

Quarq just tweeted…

Hopefully they still be available for other cranks not just SRAM.

Edit: Nevermind… Looks like they are phasing everyone else out…bummer.

I assume for now you will keep your Specialized FACT quarq, or would you move to a SRAM? (I realize that you had the option now but…)

I which crank manufacturers did not make the interface that the spindle connects to proprietary…

I have the same concerns. One big reason why I switched from PT to Quarq was besides a great product, their great customer service. I hope that does not get lost.

This deal already stinks. Maybe they keep the customer service but they are already reducing products. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the price go up. I’m sure it will be a great deal for everyone except consumers because quarq can only go down at this point–they had really reached a pinnacle in terms of service and manufacturing excellence.

Spearfish SD is a secret you all don’t need to know about. East and West Coasters just stay where you are…nothing to see here.

Are you kidding? They could never keep their stock up to date. That is the pinnacle?

Why would they raise the price? The powermeter market has no more or no fewer manufacturers than last week. The customer base hasn’t changed either.

SRAM’s manufacturing scale should bring savings for Quarq. They become more profitable and are better positioned to deal with new and existing competitors.

I’m not really seeing a downside here.

I was looking to get a rotor quarq as well… Seriously rethinking it…

Yeah thought about that too. I think the economies of scale will help tremendously here. The only qualm I have is the reduction in choices. Not that the s900 is a bad choice at all.

The only other real downside I see is the increase in the number of posts asking if you can use a SRAM crank/chainrings with Shimano front derailleurs. I still don’t understand the reason that comes up every two weeks or so…

Shoot. I hope that doesn’t deplete the funds for Sram Electronic ;(

I’ll help you out and buy it for $25—that’s 5x your $5 worth!!!

That said it is a BIG bummer that they are phasing out the Rotors…

Agreed, Andres.

I’m glad I’ve always been an SRM user.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Garmin (who now own Metrigear) did something with their ANT+ headunits to render them incompatible with Quarqs? I mean, Quarq doesn’t make a head unit, and really Garmin is the only one making compatible ones on a large scale.

But a new Cinco on a Zipp crank could be fan fn tastic if you insist of spending tons of money…

My thought was that this could be a good thing as about every bike shop on the planet is a sram dealer in some capacity which is not true of quarq, srm and PT stuff

I think that’s what is most surprising to me about SRAM buying them. I can see SRAM taking two potential “hits” on this aquisition. Because they are phasing out the other cranks and offering less options, I think it’s very possible that sales will decline from their current levels due to the reductions in the product line. I just can’t see the SRAM only Quarq option outstripping sales of their current offerings.

The 2nd hit will be because as it was previously mentioned, SRM will most likely stop offering a SRAM crank option as SRAM will now be a direct competitor. Even if SRM didn’t mind, SRAM might not want SRM to have a competing SRAM option. Anyway, when these potential losses in revenue are considered, I just don’t see how this is a great deal for SRAM. I really do think this is a very good thing for SRM and Power2Max, though. Prior to this announcement I think Quarq was starting to put SRM on the ropes a little bit, and I also thought that it was going to be slightly difficult for Power2max to gain a foothold in the US once their FCC approval came through. With these new revelations, I think the door is now wide open for them now.

Anyone know when I can get a dimpled Quarq?

The molded battery covers already have “dimples” along the outer edge
