SRAM AXS backwards compatible with etap

I just read that etap force and red axs shifters and blip box are now backwards compatible with 11 speed etap. They will remain 11 speed though. And it requires a firmware update on the shifters.

Kudos to sram on this.

This is monumental. I was honestly a bit worried that I would be SOL if anything happened to my road bike eTap. I absolutely love the 11S eTap and really do not want to move to 12S.

Will it be possible to mix axs force front derailleur and old etap 11s rear derailleur with the new blipbox.
This coz the force front derailleur is way cheaper than the old red 11s

Isn’t this only for the newer A2 11sp RD which is essentially an AXD RD with 11sp pulleys?

I posted this in the blipbox repair options thread the other day: https://forum.slowtwitch.com/…_Options_P7475454-2/

The AXS shifter/blipbox update works with all eTap Red 11s derailleurs, not just the updated A2 RD: https://support.sram.com/...nd-rear-derailleurs-

Haven’t seen a clear answer on mixing an AXS FD with a eTap RD.

I thought most of the value here was providing a BlipBox option for those with failed 11sp versions.

I’m ready to replace my old blip box with a new one. What I wasn’t sure on was the order of doing things.

  • Do I connect my blip box to the app first and then see if its firmware needs updating or is it my old 11sp mechs that are updated ?
  • Should the blipbox show up in the app when it has not been paired yet ?

I haven’t done this myself. I would not think there would be an issue connecting to your eTap system to see if it works. If not, then use AXS app to check firmware updates.

The order shouldn’t be an issue as SRAM never released a firmware update for eTap so none of those components will need a change.

bumping this

I see that the shifters are now compatible with 11 & 12 speed rear derailleur.
My question is: Can I buy a 12s derailleurs and configure it as 11speed? Or I need to get 11 speed derailleurs?

I have 2 bike sharing wheels and I would like to keep them 11s for simplicity.

You need a 11 speed derailleur
.

Going to try upgrade my tri bike. I have the new wireless blips and the etap red -A2 on the way in the post. From the looks of it i don’t need the blip box or a shifter to pair with the RD. Does anyone know if it’s the same with the FD? Looks to be only a -A1 FD

Wireless blips should not be compatible with 11s etap

They are now after a firmware upgrade but only on the second generation etap. A1 version only had ANT but the A2 version has BT and ANT. Just trying to figure out the FD

I dont have a source on this, I was pretty deep into other forums looking for an answer to your exact question, and remember finding that no, you cannot use the new blips for the etap components.

Similar to you, I just upgraded my bike to 11spd etap because I had a spare A1 laying around. I bought the blipbox (AXS) and an etap FD to complete the set, and it all works.

Honestly though if you have the option go with the 12spd axs stuff, its cheaper and you’ll be able to find replacements into the future that arent a million dollars.

I put myself into a hole by getting an old frame and having part of the drivetrain around.
