Squirt lube vs Rock n Roll Gold

I recently switched to Squirt wax based lube based on the lower friction loss reported by Friction Facts vs Rock n Roll Gold but have my doubts it’s actually a better lube. This is based on drive train noise and a sticky residue on my chain, links seem a bit sticky and not as fluid and smooth as when using RnR. I did clean a new chain prior to applying Squirt by soaking in mineral spirits and acetone over a 3 day period and changing out the fluid 3 times but still the sticky residue. Are all wax based lubes like this and thinking maybe when chain is in use the wax becomes more fluid and links loosen up??? Anyone else make the same switch or any input?

I made the exact same switch before the start of this season. I had similar results to yourself until I started using a smaller amount of squirt lube. Now, when I re-apply, I only use about half a drop per link (literally just enough to see), and that has made a nice difference. I also let the lube dry for five minutes and wipe the excess off the sides of the chain only leaving the top and bottom of the chain alone. I don’t notice a huge shifting difference between squirt and RRG (a little smoother), but I do notice that my chain stays cleaner for much longer. I also notice that it takes a ride for excess lube to flake off which makes a difference as well. Personally, I don’t know which I like better, but I’ll finish up the squirt before moving on if I do.

Are you shaking the shit out of the container when cleaning with mineral spirits? I’ve found that I don’t even have to let it soak if I can shake it good enough. The mineral spirits will stay clear on the 3rd cycle.

This is the cleaning of a new chain, I then wax vs using squirt. I tried squirt for a little while but found that it still attracted dirt. Waxing is super easy and so clean!

Quick trip to amazon and you’ll be in business. Seriously it’s so easy.

Yup shakin’ the shit out of the container and changing out the fluid until crystal clear. Thanks for your input and advice.

One other question, are you shaking the squirt up good before applying?

Is this better than using an ultrasonic cleaner?

Yup, shaking the Squirt vigorously before applying. Kinda funny when I think of it, alot of work chasing marginal gains but that’s expected from us Slowtwitcher’s, right??? haha

I just love the fact that Amazon has Molten Speed Wax under “Candle Making.”

Yikes! Over $20 for a lb?

This stuff was $2.20 a lb at Walmart last I looked:

We are triathletes. There is literally zero difference between $2 and $20.

This is a terrible teaser, but I am beta testing a completely new lubricant . . . literally off the charts if the 1st indications are correct, and VERY easy to use. I don’t believe I am allowed to give public information yet but it may debut in Kona (I will have it at least). Stay tuned . . . I’ll update if I can get permission.

Off the charts in what sense? Is there any mess?

super slick, no mess. I just emailed for permission to share. Again, not trying to be a tease. Cool technology. More soon I hope.

I love this!!! Slowtwitchers get more excited over lube than a forum for pornstars and pornography!!! Haha

“get more excited over lube than a forum for pornstars and pornography!!!”

At my age perhaps that’s why I’m so interested in lube.

Seriously though would like to hear more about the lube you’re testing, hope they let you reveal some info!!! I’m at that age too, 50 next year ; p

I use Squirt and have similar results.
Recently tried LPS1, with better results.
My LBS says Boeshield T-9 is the best wax lube out there.

Dished Grease?

Clean new chain multiple times with mineral spirits in a jar. Repeat with denatured alcohol. Clean cassette, chainrings, and jockey pulleys with mineral spirits, and alcohol. Soak clean chain in crockpot of Gulf wax. Ride and enjoy. When chain starts to get noisy, apply Squirt. The chain stays clean and lasts a long time - at least in Colorado.

I got the same result plus tons of black gunk on my floor below the chain and cassette when riding on my indoor trainer. I just recently switched back to RnR Gold.
