Squeaky P3 seatpost - help

I seem to have a squeaky seatpost on my new P3. Took it out for 1st ride today and when I’m out of the saddle its fine but when on it it “moans”. So got home as I was not 100% sure what was causing it, when I take hold of the saddle and move it slightly the noise appears and is amplified by the rest of the frame. As I built this frame up myself with full DA 10spd etc. I was VERY particular to make sure I grease everything as part of the prep. I greased the seatpost but wonder if I should try to take out the shim and grease that too? Any thoughts?

BTW the bike is AWESOME!!!

Maybe I will post some pictures of my P3 project here later… Can I just say that for 15 years now I’ve always built my own bikes, do my own maintenance and the P3 is really easy to work with. BUT I must admit my biggest surprise was the new Dura-Ace 10spd groupset… Shimano have a winner here!

I bought a griffen and had it for just over a year and it developed a noise in the seat. Greased every thing including seat rails and noise continued. like yours out of the saddle no noise. I inspected all welds no problem. Did 2 oly dis 1/2 im and an im with the noise then several sprints without finding the problem. went to nationals and happened to check it again and the problem was a crack in a weld on the upper seatpost just above the toptube. It took all that training and racing before there was a crack in the paint over the weld. Hopefully this isn’t your problem but something to consider.

Good Luck it can be frustrating mike

  1. Is it the saddle or the post. Really? Are you sure? Even if you have used the saddle on other bikes, you have mounted it differently on this bike than you have on other bikes.

  2. The post was squeaking on my P2k. I simply did not have it tight enough. I have a history of over tightening, so I was too cautious with my new bike. I gave it an extra turn and everything is fine.

As suggested here already, be sure it’s not the seat that is squeaking. I thought that my post was the culprit and tried everything. Was getting really frustrated. Finally a gal in our roadie group suggested I try the seat. Yep, she was right.

I have an '02 soloist and recently went through EVERY iteration to remedy the squeak. Check these things below

  1. Remove the seatpost and inspect for scratches cutting through the anodizing. Sometimes the weld will break through and leave a little material that does not get filed down and screws up the loading of the seat post collar on the seat post. If there are scratches on the seatpost, with your finger locate the cause and carefully file or emery board the lump flat. Remove the shim and clean / regrease the entire assembly.

  2. Clean the seat rails and ensure not grit / debris is present.

  3. Check that the seat angle adjusting cap screw is tight. This was the cause of all of my woes.

  4. Make sure the seat post collar is tight.

I hope this helps - Ernie
