Squeaky Look Pedal/Cleat interface, how to stop?

Grinding up the hills this weekend @ the TTT was hard enough but these damn squeaky pedals were driving me insane. I’m using Look Keo Sprints. The sound is definitely coming from the cleat grinding into the pedal on every downstroke. It’s happening on 2 different pairs of shoes using both the gray (1 year old) and the red (brand new) cleats. Both cleats have the rubber tabs on the bottom so I get better footing while dismounted. Anybody else have this problem?
If so, how did you solve it? Changing pedal systems is not an option.

Are you sure it’s the pedals? There are so many weird places for a bike to make noise. For example, I was convinced for the longest time that my BB was clicking, when it was really the front hub.

It is absolutely the pedals. I had a LOT of time to figure it out climbing at the TTT.

Take a bar of soap or a candle and rub it on either the cleat or pedal. That should help eliminate the noise for a while if it is definitely the cleat/pedal interface. It’s a cheap and quick solution even if you need to do it every few weeks.

   Good luck! That squeak NEVER goes away. Soap, lube, candle wax…nuthin’ ever eliminates it completely. New cleats will work for a while. Or wearing shoe covers that add a layer of something between the cleat and the pedal. But overall…you should probably just get used to it.

I could be wrong, you may have better luck than I’ve had…but overall, the squeak is just infuriating. It does seem to be more pronounced in warmer weather.

I had a squeak with the same pedals/cleats, and I finally cured it by removing the pedals from the cranks, wrapping the threads with plumber’s (silicon) tape, and then reinstalling the pedals. I have to do this about once every year (4500 miles or so). Absolutely quiet now, though.

If you can’t get rid of the squeak, you will go insane unless you are a better man than me.

Good luck!
