Sprint vs. Cruise: Same Strokes Per Length

Doug,

you are assuming that the individual has an effective 6-beat kick. I’m not sure how true that is for this audience, since the fellow who started the thread mentioned sprinting a length in 18-20 secs.

The more revealing test of ‘potential’ comes from a persons specific Center of Mass and Density. Ask a few of your friends to try a ‘dead-mans-float’ and note the differences. Then you can start to add in arm strength, ‘feel’, leg power etc…Sprinting and the ability to hold yourself together do not come from your legs, rather in your ability to seperate their movements from impacting your posture. The reason turnover gets too ‘hard’ is bc we are trying to do MORE with each stroke when sprinting. Just like DPS teaches us when we are going slow. Getting away from DPS when going slow will allow faster turnover once you try to go fast.

Dev,
The reality is tht we are actually not going that much faster. One of the functions of your kick is to help torque your hips (rotation). If you feel as if your are flailing your kick and arms are not in sync. Sprinters look smooth when they swim. They do rotate a bit less than distance swimmers.

More,
I have seen Aztec swim. When he focuses he actually has an effective kick.

doug,

can i ask a related question? do you have a rule of thumb of strokes/length compared to height?

For example, I’m 6’2" and my s/l is 15 for scy…is this good or terrible…or does this number even matter as long as its within a certain range (say 14-18). FWIW, I have a terribly weak 2-beat kick.

As related to the original topic…If I’m sprinting, my stroke count drops to about 13.5. I say .5 because I can either do a long glide into my flip on the 13th stroke or take an abbreviated 14th stroke.

thanks.

The time I’ve seen that kind of formula discussed was here:

All things being equal, a tall person will take fewer strokes than a shorter person but nothing is equal in swimmers. It is sport of skill which to a large extend determines your stroke count.

no… when I swim 25 second 25’s I take 14 strokes and when I swim 13 second 25’s I take 14 strokes. Its about how fast you execute the same motion.
