Spray-painting a profile aero bottle

Since my last bike crash, I have went with the profile aero bottle (too scared to drink from a squirt bottle while in aero bars). This year they came out with the insulated bottle, which I like. Problem is, it’s white and just stands out against my black P3 frame. I was wondering if I spray-painted it black how much it might effect me/.

I’m a MOP’er (11:41 @ IMFLA - 5:43 bike split), but do hit some AG podiums in local sprints. Does anyone think it would matter that much or not with the extra weight or some how less “aero”?

Wouldn’t matter
.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the question, but are you asking if painting the bottle will affect your performance?

The fluids will heatnup quicker then in white plastic. Use the krylon fusion paint.

Are you asking about the paint’s affect on you from ingestion? Just don’t paint the inside and you’ll be fine. I bet it doesn’t stay on long-term though.

Make sure you use glossy paint. You know, for the aerodynamics.

I used to work for a major spray paint company…my advice is “Don’t bother.” While there are lots of new spray paints that are designed for plastic (Krylon Fusion, Rust-Oleum Paint for Plastic, and one from Valspar) they are really meant for sturdy plastic that is not being manhandled much. Think plastic patio furniture, pots, etc. My guess is that it will eventually, if not quickly, begin to crack and flake off.

:casty:

I have GONE.

I hope you learned SOMETHING at LSU.

If you scuff and clean it properly it will have a better chance of lasting.

I painted my Bontrager aero bottle “BLACK” to keep the all black look on my TT bike. I used auto paint(auto parts store) especially made for plastic/composite bumpers. It has worked just fine.

just color it in with a sharpie. It will look classy

Since everyone else seems to be going soft on you, let me say it in plain English: painting a water bottle to match your bike is just plain GAY!! U should most likely paint it in rainbow colors and save us the trouble of demeaning your metro-ness. Don’t forget to put your mullet in a pony tail whilst spraying said rainbow colors.

There, I feel better.
 much love.

I’ve tried it with the Krylon Fusion “for plastic stuff”. As others postulated, it did crack and start flaking off quite soon after.

If you do paint it, mask off the sections that contact the cage (leave them white), as the pain will always wear/peel there.

Spray painted my Bontranger bottle black.
Paint has held on quite well.
I rarely move it from the mount.
It has shown some signs of wear in the contact areas but very minimal.

What kind of paint did use? Did you lightly sand it before hand? Or put a gloss coat on after? It looks pretty nice!

Thanks

Thats a good option, thanks.

What did you do before you painted it? That looks real nice.

I have GONE.

If we are hair splitting then I am not sure that is grammatically correct either

I can understand the water bottle painting … I wouldn’t do it but I sort of see where you are coming from. However … extra weight or less aero?

You may be taking things to an extreme. If you are then may I recommend Microderm Abrasion (spelling?) which should knock around 1/1000th of a second from a 30 day bike ride. That may make up for any weight / aero issues from the spray paint.

I figured it was a bit extreme and it wouldn’t make a difference, but I wasn’t sure. I figured it was worth at least asking. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that putting stickers on aero helmets was a no-no for some reason (although I see it done by pros all the time), and wasn’t sure if the same principle applied.

I’d definately let it cure at least a week, or bake it . . . lol careful
