Not surprising. 99% of followers of Lance are completely clueless of all the circumstantial evidence that surrounds him. one half of a % does not care so that leaves one half % that do not care for him

To be fair, Ben Johnson isn’t hated. It’s more a disappointment in him. I mean, after the Dubbin enquiry, where it came out that he had the mental age of about 9 I think it was, the whole country pretty much just felt sorry for him. We’re not proud of him, for sure, but hated? not that either.
I didn’t know that about Ben, but as history has now shown us, even the rocket scientists among pro sports are not immune to the lure of PEDS. I just remember when it happened to him, quite a bit of hate then, but as you say, it has tempered with time and understanding.

OTOH, maybe the 50/50 split between Lance “fanboys” and “haters” you usually see in this and other forums is misleading - since “haters” are typically much more noisy AND (sadly) prolix.
Maybe, even among more niche, knowledgeable crowds, he is not all that “hated”.

I lived in Canada back in the day.
I was shocked when Ben was caught (and clearly remember where I was when I heard the news) because I’d followed his running since he was about 15. I’d watch the local high school athletics meets on the local cable access channel. Even at 15, he was beefier than most other runners, and his weight and now known to be steriod enhanced figure, grew slowly from year to year. From 15 onwards, he didn’t have the fast increase in bulk, or meteoric increase in speed that most PED abusers display.
I noticed him because he was fast and kept getting faster and thought that Olympic Gold and the World Record were the natural culmination of the work he’d been doing for years. I was dumbstruck when he was busted. Sad day all around, and sad to find out he’d been manipulated by his coach. Charlie Francis? his coach was a bad man.
However, the one thing Ben showed, steriods or not, was the being chunky up top was beneficial for sprinters. He showed emphatically that sprinting wasn’t just a leg thing. Having the upper body mass to push against so to speak, could increase ones speed. Notice how todays sprinters are all a lot chunkier than they used to be.
I wonder what he’s up to. I hope he managed to keep hold of at least some of the money he made and wasn’t ripped off by management etc, and isn’t resigned to flipping burgers next to Elvis.
If you put Lance on the list it is admitting you like cancer.

I wouldn’t expect LA to be on the list. However, maybe he wasn’t even one of the choices as we don’t know who was on the list from which people chose.

That’s a BS list. It’s all athletes currently competing. There should have been an asterisk on that title.
There are plenty of athletes who are hated more than those guys, but they’re no longer competing.’
