Sponge-worthy... of triathlon?

Zinger of a Seinfeld reference for a title, eh? But I’m looking for a different type of sponge. Give me credit, I tried to do a forum search first but couldn’t find anything relevant.

I’ve seen photos of people using sponges while running during longer races. I assume this is to help keep cool. I assume the typical scouring pad would be too abrasive, so where do I look for a nice pair? I’ve had girlfriends who use little make-up sponges that are very soft, but way too small. I think I want something along that texture, just bigger. Should I check the car washing section of Walmart? Suggestions?

I think this question belongs in the womens forum. (just kidding)

Any auto parts store will have large, thick sponges that are soft and you can cut to size.

Dude… you cant give a thread that title and then want advice about an accessory to transport your sweat… its just wrong!

The question is, non_sequitur, “ARE YOU SPONGE-WORTHY?”

Great episode. Makes me think of the “Master of Your Domain” episode… “I’M OUT!” hehe

I believe that is more generally referred to as simply “The Contest”
.

You pick them up on the course – they put them in buckets of cold water and you just grab them as you run by . . . there is no need to take your own.

What I do for IM is I use small soft sponges that I put in water, then inside a zip-lock bag and then I freeze them. On race morning I drop the sponges on both my special needs bags. By the time I hit special needs, I have really cool and soft wet sponges that I use to clean and cool myself.

Yes they put all those lovely sponges in buckets of water and after people have used them to wipe themselves off they pick them up off the ground and put them back in the buckets for the next guys coming along to wipe off the spit and vomit and stuff off before repeating the process. In longer events it's more than spit and sweat that gets wiped off by those sponges before they are put back into those buckets to be re-used.Our legendary marathoner Rob DeCastella ran a campaign a few years ago to have sponges banned in all events in Oz because of the health risks associated with the use of sponges in events. His advice was acted upon. There is no problem using them once, it's the fact that they get used again and again and dipped in the same dirty water all day that is the problem.

That is why it is very important to be at the front of the race. Those sponges are downright ewueeeee. I don’t even want to think what they can be used for.
