2010 my spleen exploded inside my stomach. No medical reason was given. Long recovery physically and mentally. Now 2013 i had ultra sound and doctors have found. A hernia 9x9cm plus 4 others in the scar that I have been left with. Cysts on my kidneys.
I am devastated as I now may have to be reopened again and heal all over again.
I would appreciate any feed back from anyone else that has had similar set backs.
in '89 i had my spleen taken out thanks to a drunk driver. recovered just fine. took up tri’s in about 95 and then the back issues surfaced. after 8 years of training and racing in pain i had a discectomy. during recovery the wound site became infected and had to be re-opened and cleaned. i was on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks.
after that i was stronger, fitter, and faster than ever and pain free for the first time in many years. i did a lot of rehab work on my own. a lot.
hang in there, you can beat this.

Not a surgeon and I don’t know whether you need surgical management of your splenosis. But if the ultrasound was done without you having symptoms, I’d say surgery is elective rather than indicated.
Had my spleen removed in 1974. The only thing I notice is that I tend to have a little more trouble clearing medicine and such from my blood stream. The spleen acts as a filter. Beyond that, I have not noticed effects on my athletics. I have done a wide range of sports in the ensuing 39 years. You probably know this, but there are medical issues with not having a spleen. Your doc may want to give you pneumovax injections. Some illinesses – esp. malaria, meningitis and pneumonia – can be much more serious for someone without a spleen.
Thank u for great replies.
This issue now is a hernia 9x9cm. Causing me pain I’ve been referred to a surgeon. The cyst on kidney showed up when having ultra sound. My question was, am I to expect these issues to flair up because of no spleen. Also my immunisations are up to date.
Thank you Robert. I’m going to my gp on Friday and she is excellent and a lot closer then Atlanta. I do appreciate all the info everyone has offered. Thank u …
